The Minto — the best-known of the lake paddie- wheelers — was built back East, according to the authors of The Story of Renata, then shipped to Nakusp in a thousand A total of 162 feet long, 30 feet wide and carrying a full crew, 75 passengers and a full cargo, she drew only five feet of water. When she went to her last resting place in a fiery Viking funeral pyre in 1966 off Galena Bay in the Upper Arrow she left an aching gap in the lives of hundreds of people along the lake. One of those who loved her is Art Koch, pioneer and man of many parts. While watching the model Minto perform — all her lights on the cabin and deck operate, the winches work and the little engine turns the paddlewheel to push her through the water — we talked of some of Art's early memories of life on the lake. He was born in moved to and when he was about three, then moved to Renata via Nakusp on the biggest of the lake ships, the SS Bonnington in 1922. Renata at that time was a thriving little farm community built in 1887. It died in 1965 with the building of the Hugh Keenleyside dam and the remains of 58 of its former residents, including several of Art's and Mary's families, lie beneath a great slab of concrete in the little cemetery beneath the waters of the Arrow reservoir. There is a memorial marker in the Robson Church graveyard with the names of the dead. “We came down through Revelstoke and Nakusp,” said Art, “I believe it was in October. I was three years old. Then we took the SS Bonnington, she was the largest of the lake ships — much bigger than the Minto — to Renata. “My father was a farmer and carpenter, but basically a farmer. We rented an orchard for several years, then bought a bare piece of land, planted it with fruit trees and berries, and built a house. The soil was good for fruit — gravelly, but produced well with irrigation. At that time there would be about 150 people at Renata, all farmers. “There was also a sawmill and a pipe factory. The pipe factory made wooden pipe out of bored-out tree trunks -4 almest any trees except cedar. It operated until the mid-30s. I worked in the mill. It manufactured “skeet” — fruit bot parts — which you bought and nailed together: ot ome. You could even have your name and for firehall The Balfour/Harrop Fire has received $40,000 from the provincial government to help build a firehall. The money comes from the provincial Lottery Fund. The cheque was recently pre sented to fire chief Bruce Meldrum by Labor minister you're the winner of « 365-5191 John Charters... Reflections & recollections Minto. All the | printed sometime before 1933." There was also a school in the little community. The first one had been a log house, according the The Story of Renata. The first teacher, was a Miss Elinor Redhead from Niagara-on-the Lake in Ontario, with children from the Nash, Siemans and Rempel families the first pupils. It was replaced by a permanent school built with volunteer labor and lumber donated by the Harms lumber mill. In 1946, following the recommendations of the Cameron Report, the various small school districts in the area were consolidated into School District No. 9 (Castlegar) and Art became Renata's first trustee in the school principal in Trail, and still later a superintendent. Very few students went on to high school in those days since it was too expensive to send them to Trail or Nelson and the boys particularly were needed to work on the farms, Art said. A number, like himself, furthered their education with training courses by correspondence. When the Minto was decommissioned in 1954 a road was built to Deer Park and Kochs remembered a teacher “very popular with the handbells”. (Ted Eames, now deceased) took part with his bell ringers, at the ceremonies. ‘The road was extended to Renata about a year later and Art started pushing a cargo scow across the lake to a sandpoint to make a road connection across the lake — three to four trips a day. In 1967 a government scow was installed and Art operated it for another 10 years until they were bought out by B.C. pi panalirap log enped tedden and Art went to work for the Castlegar school board. He had always been interested in boats, Art said, but it wasn't until about 10 years ago that he started having time to build models. The famous SS Beaver, one of the initial paddlewheelers on the B.C. coast, was his first love. She had been built in England in 1835 and came around the Horn by sail to Vancouver where her paddle- wheels were installed. The trip took nine months Art said — “like a pregnancy”, Mary added. She was wrecked off Prospect Point on July 26, 1888 and she was Art's first model ship. Osborne Sutherland with Koch's model of the SS Elco Il. Another SS Beaver fancier was “J.C.” Urquhart of Rossland who had as his dearest possession a walking cane made of the wood and brass fittings of the old ship. He carried it with him everywhere. Art then started on a model of the SS :Eleo Il, Captain Osborne Sutherland's well-know ship Iaunehed in 1925. At the request of the late Marion Sutherland, he suspended work on the Elco to build her a model of the SS Marion, a cargo and passenger paddlewheeler captained by her father, Captain Robert Sanderson. It was one her treasures until she died. The model of the SS Minto is, therefore, not just another handicraft but a reminder and a reflection of our all-too brief and all-too disregarded past. The original was lost to us largely through timidity and short-sightedness and once gone was gone forever. To such people as Art Koch we owe a debt of gratitude for not letting us forget completely. Meanwhile, our newest challenge has appeared on the horizon — the CP Rail station house — as appear it must. I commend the city council on its determination to save what is left our cultural heritage, little as it is, and would urge that all citizens, especially that tough brand of cats, the railway buffs, to give the matter the fullest support.
