The concept of a support network of “women helping women to help themselves” in Trail originated with a small group of friends. As psychiatric nurses working in the local hospital, they shared the frustration of caring for many physically and emotionally battered women, then hav ing to send them back to an outside world that offered little in the way of ongoing support. The hospital was, in fact, often a temporary respite for victims of domestic violence. These same nurses dedicated a great deal of their free time breaking the conspiracy of silence and shame surrounding wife battering, grandstanding in the media and lobbying governments for recognition of the problem. These women were the first volunteers of the Women In Need Society which was established in 1980, followed shortly thereafter by the Transition House, a safe refuge for physically and emotionally battered women and their children. These days, very few people in the Kootenays have not heard of WINS. Besides operating the Transition House, the society oversees the 24-hour crisis line, weekly women's support groups, and community education. WINS has also, in the past year, helped several communities in the Kootenays from Westbridge to Elk ford — establish their own women's support groups. Many more programs are planned, and WINS has had to open a new office in downtown Trail to accommodate its expanding profile Volunteers have always been the backbone and the driving force that have kept the organization strong and growth-oriented. Administrator Mary Hamann, herself a one-time WINS volunteer, observes that through their work at WINS, literally scores of women have been exposed to a number of opportunities. WINS volunteers are educated in a variety of people Job openings oriented skills, and many have gone on to other jobs in the social service field, or to upgrade or further their educations. Volunteers are encouraged and supported emotionally, not only on the job, but long after they leave for other activities, Anne Gill, the Transition House Coordinator, is willing to train women interested in volunteering in a variety of areas including crisis line work, admitting and orientating clients to the Transition House, accompanying clients to appointments, and advocacy. Women demonstrating in. terest in public speaking and fundraising are also greatly valued. WINS President Eleanor Harper says that the society will soon be requiring additional board members. The board of directors takes responsibility for the direction of the organization, oversees new programs, and serves as resource and support personnel for all staff members. Board members also assist with community education. THE HONEYBEE HAS ARRIVED At the Plaza gs Sipervau GRAND FORKS HONEY Unpasteurized from home accepted, please.)
