I was raised in Rossland and‘ received all my schooling there. I moved to Castlegar in 1973 I have been married~ for 23 years to Herb Neumann, shop foreman for the City Castlegar. We have daughters, Deanna and and one son, Brent. Deanna had all her schooling in Castlegar and graduated in 1987. Darla is in Grade 12 at Stanley Humphries secondary school and Brent is in Grade 8 at Kinnaird Junior secondary school I was a homemaker for 21 years and went back to school in 1986 at Selkirk’ College, graduating from the long-term care aide program in 1987. 1 now work for Castlegar and District Home Support Services. My involvement in the com. munity includes: secretary for Brownies for two years; JANET NEUMANN secretary/coach president of Castlegar and District. Girls Sof- tball, involved for 10 years; secretary of the Band Booster Club at KJSS; secretary/chair- man for No. 581 Royal Canadian please see NEUMANN page 04 Gordon Turner, a respected Selkirk College instructor, brings a history of many years’ service to education, He has been a trustee for the city for six yea now, but before that he was a university instructor, an elemen- tary/high school teacher, and a supervisor of teacher tri ig al Simon Fraser University. This background enables’ him to un- derstand the larger educational framework trustees must work within. In addition, during his service to Castlegar a trustee, he has been vice-chairman for two years and chairman for three years. During those years, the board weathered the gover- nment’s restraint program quite admirably and is now in a position to offer more programs to children. Throughout his time on the board, Turner has stood for choices. He has stated that ‘‘the more choices available to our children, the better the chances For the 90 's. On Nov. 17th For School Dist. No, 9 VOTE MA LOFF Beverley RE-ELECT FOR ALDERMAN GORDON TURNER are that the school system will meet the needs of every child.”’ He has supported the concept and the staffing to mainstream special needs students within our schools and he has voted for please see TURNER page D4 SMECHER Doreen Students attend workshop Exciting workshops, good com panionship and a good time was had by the 215 students and sponsors that attended ICBC’s 1990 Excel Youth Leadership Conference at Fairmont Hot Springs resort Oct. 28, 29 and 30. Local students Dina Gauthier, Dan Stelck and Treena Baker from Stanley Humphries secondary school attended and learned the advantages of taking risks and standing up against peers in order to defend what is right and accepted by the com- munity, a news release said The workshops are designed to educate students about traffic safety and encourage them to take an active part in promoting it to their peers. The students learned about com- munication, handling peer pressure, assertiveness training, marketing and dry grads, and worked on creative ways to present messages. Highlights of the ctnference in- cluded keynote speakers Ray Mat- thews and Norbert Georget. Mattews is president of a clothing company, and a consultant for a second com- pany. Georget, a paramedic, is an in- ternationally known speaker and student motivator. Georget founded counselling and motivational assem- blies for Canadian students. Other highlights included a MuchMusic video dance party with guest Mike Williams This is the third year that the ab ference has been held in the Kootenays. It is one in a series of conferences throughout B.C. inten- ded to enable students to meet and learn about traffic safety and leader- ship. The conference focuses on youth because traffic accidents are the prime cause of death among people between the ages of 16 and 20 in B.C. One of the main themes of the conference was ‘youth can make a difference,’’ the release said The 215 students in attendance represented 20 schools from 11 districts in the Kootenays Action Ad Phone Number is 365-2212 IT'S LOWER THAN U.S. PURCHASING! 2 5 Discount A Smashing On more than 125 LA-Z-BOY RECLINERS!
