CASTLEGAR NEWS, evs April, 1975 A Sign of Our Times? . Lady insulted -- Not a Voice Raised Robert Fulford A ane inthe Toronto Star One of the. themes of $Robertson Davies’ new play, {Question Time, is the relation- ‘ship between the polltician and tthe private individual who struggles to exist within the {politician, Davics asks the ‘question: can you possess a ‘private and possibly immortal soul while living a public life? The hero of Question Time i a prime minister of Canada 0 has apparently sold his ‘true self down the river while tselling his public image to the tvoters, {Ini the: process he has igrievously injured some of “those around him. One of the {play's most interesting scenes iImed sequence in which a ar and insolent TV inter- iviewer tears away at the ‘private feelings of the prime Iminister's 's wife. Twas at the St, Lawzence “Centre on March 4, watching ‘Question Time, so that night I missed the CBC television show Primetime. But someone told me about it, the next morning cand I asked the cBC to show me the tape. What I saw was a striking ‘Hillustration of Davies’ theme. ‘While the actors at the theatre were playing it out in fictional terms, Don McNeill and Flora MacDonald, on CBC television, were giving a reallife demon- stration. And they were also, possibly, indicating a signifi- cant change in Canadian public ‘life. « Anyone who notices these things must have observed long ‘ago that there are serious differences between the way ‘Americana and Canadians ap- proach the issue of privacy. In the United States a tohave celebrity wants to talk about his marital troubles or her drinking problem, let them. Ifa prime minlster's wife voluntar- ily ‘chooses to discuss her emotional life on television, fine. But if the individual doesn't want this kind: of exposure it won't be given. In Canada, when a TV star breaks up with his wife, the newspapers remain silent—un- toss the divorce eventually becomes a spectacular case in public court, Last year three or four media stars in Canada endured marriage breakdowns. Nothing was printed, The rule isn't always kept, but it governs most reporting about our public figures. lany people probably have ambivalent feelings about this practice. Sometimes Cana- dians hide too much; sometimes our respect for the private lives of the famous slides over into a false piety about thelr working lives as well. Sometimes, brief ly, I yearn to have the public hear the everyday gossip of the press gallery or the Four Seasons bar, But the value of the rule outwelghts its costs. The rule “expresses a fundamental bellef that, what people offer in the marketplace is thelr work, not their souls. Davies, in his play, is saying something like that: we are entitled to use our public > figurea but not to own them, That's why Primetime was appalling—and why the lack of any public reaction’ to Don MeNelll, in the course of asking Flora MacDonald about her possible bid to lead the federal Tories, stepped a long way over the line that separates the decent from the indecent in “ho. right to privacy; and mere ‘act of becoming famous renders him defenceless against anyone who wants to write or talk publicly about the most: inti- mate details of his life. In Canada this isn't so—not yet, anyway. Canadian journal- ists and TV people work on a simple rule, whether they arti: culate it or, not..The rule js: let the subject decide, justihow— ‘much privacy he or she wants to retain. Certainly, such debates as to wear or not, to wear seat belts or to travel at 65 mph or 70 mph far outstrip any talk pr concern about what the.person on foot ought to be doing to ensure his safety. Yet, of the 6,000 people killed in motor vehicle acel- dents in Canada last year, 20 per cent or 1,200 jeople were killed by a car or other vehicle while walking. Another 20,000 pedeatrians were struck and Injured by a motor vehicle, Obviously, our pedestrian 7 . Accident record is of the propor- tion that demands concern by . all Canadians. The B.C. Automobile As- soclation is urging everyone to “Walk Wise With Your Eyes" and that includes car drivers as well, for as a BCAA safety official puts it, “even if you ive a car, you get out and walk sometime and then ‘you are just as vulnerable as any other pedestrian.” However, because motar vehicles are involved in vir- tually every:pedeatrian accl- dent, the motorist has another role to play: being prepared for the pedestrian. ‘The majority of pedestrian accidents involve people who have never been licensed to drive, The person walking, who. has never driven, is not aware of the motorist's limited vision, nor is he capable of estimating © an automobile’s minimum astop- ping distance at various speeds. ‘The aut that FRYING CHICKEN ROUND STEAK OVEN ROASTS FRESH, FROSTED ...
