A fresh fall of vdtamight gnow has sisea the trail a layer of soft powder. Little. fingers of early morning sun glint through the trees, and the only sound in the stillness is the swoosh-swoosh of his ight wooden skis as he moves forward in gentle rhythm. He's wearing his patterned navy and white handknit wool socks with ‘ mitts to match. He's wearing the toque he always’ wears, the one with the bronze and silver buttons — awards for ~ skiing. He’s Ivar Reinsbakken, president ‘of the Nordic Ski Club and he skis three, sometimes four'times a week. ° Skiing is something Ivar has done for as long as he - can remember. From his native Norway, where with his one pair | of wide wooden skis he “did running and° same and where “skiing was.a‘ means of. getting around,” to Canada where skiing is his favorite recre-" ation, Ivar has skied. In fact, the very word “ski” comes from .the Norwegian « word “skith” which . means “snowshoe.": For ‘a: ‘season in’ Norway, Ivar collected taxes, and skiiig. was the only way he had of getting up to * “many. of the farmhouses, * When Ivar came to Castlegar i in 1952, heand his wife Gunvar ‘skied all over the countryside, much, to the of many of the other to’ whom skiing was a very foreign occupation. The two of them hooked their feet into very wide skis in order to plow their way through the deep snow. Narrow racing skis were atill a thing of the future. “When I came to Canada for years I used a pair of downhill skis which I took the steel edges off. Oh they were:so heavy.” He now uses a pair of fairly wide wooden skis now «which he has had for years, and “I swear to them.” He begins his season by hot waxing the entire length of the bottoms with plain parafin “for glide”. Then,he waxes the center about a. foot, under. his boot “for kicking.” Ivar basically carries fopr waxes’ in his cross-country pack; green, blue, ‘purple. and red. With the dozens of new waxes on the market and more coming out each season, — . Ivar. still'sticks to these -four. Always green; never dry.” The snow came to their-aréa around the beginning of December and would leave in: “March. When Ivar was 18 he got his first job, working ona . very large farm. “In the summertime J looked after the cows and in the winter I cut wood and ‘cleaned out manure. That was untill was 19.” Then Ivar went to Oslo where he worked for six years delivering milk. When the war broke out he enlisted. After the war ended and Norway. was no longer occupied, Ivar went to army school »intending to make a career of the services. Instead He and Gunver rented a farm and worked it for three years until they came to Canada. Once in Castlegar, Ivar got a job with Cominco and has worked there as a carpenter and millwright for 20 years before he retired a few years ago to build. houses. Besides skiing, Ivar enjoys making things with wood. He showed me through his workshop where he spends a : lot of his‘free time now. His speciality is a collapsable, folding picnic table. Whey you have finished eating your lunch, the center of the table comes apart and the halves become the backs of the benches. He also makes patio rocking chairs, candle holders (shiny red for Christmas) _ and coffee tables out of the center of trees.
