A newspaper survey shows Roman Catholic priests in Winnipeg diocese are at the bottom of the earning scale for local members of the clergy, earning even less than some of their brothers in neighboring St. Boniface diocese. However, the Winnipeg-priests get their room and board paid by their parishes. At the top end of the scale are some of the city’s rabbis, but they must pay all their own expenses. Salaries for mii in P tend to fall somewhere in between. Msgr. Michael Moore said the 76 priests in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Winnipeg get a take-home pay of only $4,920 a year but their major expenses are paid. HEARS NO GRUMBLING Moore said he hasn't hard any grumblings about low wages, and he noted that priests who take a vow of poverty are not allowed to retain any earnings. ‘ Moore said the Archbishop of Winnipeg, Most Rev. Adam Exner, belongs to the Oblates of Mary Immaculate counterparts in the Winnipeg archdiocese. Rev. Henri Perron, vicar-general of the diocese, said a priest gets $14,208 a year but must pay for his own room and board. At the other end of the scale, rabbis in Winnipeg Church pays little earn $20,000 to $60,000 a year, negotiating individual contracts with their congregations. * Rabbi Eugene Wernick of Shaarey Zedek, a large ministers also get $6,000 for travel and housing expenses. MOST PAY MINIMUM Veines said United Church parishes may pay ministers above-scale salaries but he added that only happens in about 25 per cent of the cases. However, Veines noted salaries aren't the main attraction of the ministry. “My experience is that clergy are looking for challenges rather than financial renumeration.” Rt. Rev. Walter Jones, Bishop of the Anglican diocese of Rupert's Land, said a starting clergyman gets a basic stipend of $13,529 a year. q He said the salary rises to $21,073 annually after 25 years of service but some wealthier chufches pay their ministers more than the scale. One Anglican clergyman complained that a $7,200-a- year minimum housing allowance may be cut if the minister is a woman with a working husband. “There's a bit of sexual discrimination involved,” he ‘Rev. Ted Chell of the Midwest Synod of the Lutheran Church in America said new ministers start at $14,090 a year and rise to a base salary of $21,300 after 15 The synod also recommends its clery get a car allowance of $3,100 a year, plus $400 for dental bills, $300 for education and $200 for books. a Interest ke Free (O.A.C.) But $100 an hour for an executive is not exhorbitant.” ‘The Colts said Sophistication Plus wants to improve the image of escort agencies. Prospective clients are interview- ed before being put in touch with an escort. WANT COMPANION Clients are often businessmen who want a female escort for dinner or to “make an impression” on associates or professional women “who don't have time to attend normal places and functions where most women meet men. “Our clients want someone to talk to and who can talk back to them, We offer people who can talk about your concerns. “I don't say there are no sexual encounters. But it's between two consenting adults. But that is not our focus or aim.” Encounter Entertainment offers “a very discreet kind of service,” says owner Janet Lake, a former Vancouver stripper. Her escorts receive clients “at our place of business,” a residence which she declined to identify. “I want clients to feel satisfied and ladies to have a good time. Whether that means playing tiddlywinks or telling a life story or taking all your clothes off doesn't really matter as long as the objective is accomplished.” Encounter’s employees pay the agency a percentage. They usually start earning about two-thirds of the $150 fee. Lake said three-quarters of her customers are “regular people and as ‘such are like friends. Some are out-of-town businessmen.” City of Victoria licence inspector Jack Callan said there are no special requirements for a business licence for an escort service. But he forwards all requests to the police. Victoria police say they are suspicious but not certain that some escort agencies are fronts for prostitution. “We know a couple of girls who have pager numbers,” said Insp. Gordon Bennett. “Our information leads us to believe they are using this form of communication to promote their prostitution. But we are not trying to tar all escort services with the same brush.” Bennett said police have never received any complaints from the public about escort services. (CP) MEDICINE _ HIP JOINTS MEAN MORE THAN HEARTS EDMONTON (CP) — Artificial hearts grab the but hip-joint repl oly He said 80,000 hip joints are replaced in the United States each year, while only three people have received artificial hearts. Joint replacements began in the early BENEFIT GREAT “I believe when history looks back at this it will find joint replacement in the older age population is one of the the medical ity has given 1960s. largest society in the 20th century,” Glasgow said. “It doesn’t catch the public's eye like heart its or artificial hearts, but when you're Jooking at a multitude of thousands throughout the world, it has been a fantastic contribution.” Artificial hip joints consist of a ball atop a short stem, made out of a metal such as titanium, and a plastic or ceramic cup. In surgery, the stem is cemented in the thigh bone and the cup is implanted in the hip bone. Hip joints are normally replaced in people 60 or older who often are enduring pain or are bedridden because of deterioration in the joint. NOT FOR YOUNG Glasgow said that with current materials an artificial joint can loosen if used in younger patients and the operation would have to be repeated. By choosing older patients the loosening, caused mainly by enlargement of the marrow cavity in the bone between ages 50 and 66, is largely avoided. “When you have to redo the surgery, the result isn't as good as it was the first time,” he said. “There becomes a law of diminishing returns whereby the time you do the third revision the individual has a lot of pain and discomfort and is not that much further ahead than if you'd left them alone.” Expandable bonding agents might overcome the problem but the technology has not been ped yet, Glasgow said. The other alternative is cementless joints where the bone grows into grooves on the artificial joint, but the effectiveness of such a procedure has not been conclusively proven. RISK SLIGHT Although a joint replacement operation, like any surgery. is accompanied by risk, “there's not a good reason to avoid it because of fear of disastrous consequences,” Glasgow said. “It almost never occurs. “This is not a particularly risky operation. We do it in the 60-, 70-, 80- and 90-year-olds, and they come through it very, well.” The main reason a patient would have the operation is to eliminate pain, Glasgow said. The pain occurs because of injury or wear in the lining of the joint, often because of disease such as arthritis. “The dignity of a human being dictates that they be able to walk erect, proud, if you wish,” he said. “This is what this (joint replacement) gives back to the individual. “It allows them to get up and around, walking with no pain, with good posture and participating in most things with their fellow human beings without discomfort.” IN CHILDREN Colds disrupt defences BOSTON (AP) — Viruses that cause colds in children tures that sweep germs out of the lungs and ears. The textured effect is ob- tained by four methods of cutting hair — point, brick, block and slide. Point cutting is done by using the point of the scissors to cut down into the hair, producing different lengths. To brick cut, a section of hair is lifted and strands cut in varying lengths with small spaces between the cuts, Such as occur in a brick wall. When block cut, a section of hair is separated and cut all to the same length, whereas a slide cut makes a cireular motion through the hair section, producing a blended transition to various lengths. x DR.
