EDMONTON (CP) — An Edmonton researcher believes
her work and other studies could one day lead to the
development of a vaccine against the most common sexually
transmitted disease — chlamydia.

Dr. Wanda Wenman, a pediatric ist in inf

diseases at the University of Alberta Hospital, said her
research has identified two proteins that are part of the
chlamydia bacteria and could form part of a vaccine.

She has found in laboratory tests that antibodies pro-
duced from the proteins prevent growth of the bacteria.
“But it has not been tried on animals or humans,” Wenman
said in an interview.

She expects about five years of research and develop-
ment will be needed to perfect the vaccine.

CAUSES BLINDNESS

The disease can cause pelvic inflammatory disease in
women and subsequent infertility. Infants infected from
their mothers at birth can develop pneumonia. In the Third
World, chlamydia (pronounced clam-idia) is a common cause
of blindness.

Pinpointing the proteins represents “the first time
anyone has been able to identify the key elements that
initiate the infection,” said Wenman.

Chlamydia is the most common veneral disease, far out-
distancing other infections like herpes or AIDS. It's twice as
common as gonorrhea and is probably the most common
infectious cause of infertility in the western world, Wenman
said.

In high-risk groups in North America — such as single
young pedple in poor inner-city areas — 15 to 20 per cent are
infected, she said.

“In North America, we sometimes lose sight of the fact
that chlamydia is one of the major diseases of mankind. It is
one of the world’s leading it causes of bli .

CAN BE CURED

Chlamydia can be cured with antibiotics but it is
difficult to diagnose and often goes undetected.

Wenman said people can carry it without symptoms.
Men tend more often to have symptoms —. such as burning
during urination — than women.

Women “may have no problems until they (develop)
pelvic inflammatory disease and this will create abdominal
pain,” she said.

“There may be a lot of tissue damage by the time the
disease becomes apparent. At that point, you can eradicate
the chlamydia, but there may still be long-term damage.”

SIGNS SIMILAR

A problem doctors face in trying to diagnose the disease
is that the symptoms are very similar to those of gonorrhea.

“Clinically, it’s difficult, if not impossible to tell, the
difference, so one has to depend on the lab report,” Wenman
said.

Current testing methods present some problems. A
tissue-culture test is the most reliable, but it takes several
days. A never, quicker laboratory test can be unreliable.

A byproduct of Wenman's work could be tests that are
easier and quicker to use and less likely to produce false
results.

Once: a vaccine is ready, Wenman sees it being
administered first to high-risk groups like teenagers and
young adults. The vaccination could be given before an
