Castlegar News February 10, 1988 Olympic solved berta city of Lethbridge say ASA cuts heart attach risk BOSTON (AP) — Healthy men can cut their risk of heart attacks nearly in half by taking a single ASA tablet every other day, a major new study concludes. ASA — acetylsalicylic acid, popularly known by the attacks by 47 per cent among men who had never suffered heart attacks, strokes or other serious illness, The study was conducted on 22,071 male physicians. “It's a big, whopping decrease,” said Dr. Charles Kk who directed the study at Harvard Medical brand name Aspirin — is widely r ded for people who already have Had heart attacks or strokes. But the new research is the first to show regular ASA is good for those whose hearts are still outwardly healthy. “There will be many thousands of people whose heart attacks will be prevented by this medical inter. vention,” predicted Dr. Lawrence Cohen of Yale Medical School. Heart attacks are the leading killer in North America. The Amercian Heart Association estimates as many as 1.5 million men will suffer heart attacks in the United States alone this year, and 540,000 of them will die. In the latest study, ASA lowered the risk of heart School and Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, The study was supposed to go on until 1990, but it was stopped last month because it found “an extreme beneficial effect” of aspirin on both fatal and non-fatal heart attacks. It also found regular ASA seems to promote one form of stroke, although these are far less common than heart attacks. Opinions varied over just how widely ASA should be used in light of the new findings. Cohen suggested all men between ages 35 and 70 should take ASA, regardless of their risk factors, as long CLASSIFIED SHOWCASE as the drug doesn't cause gastrointestinal upset or bleeding. He said women should use ASA if they have some risk factor for heart attack, such as high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, smoking, diabetes or a family history of heart attacks. Dr. William Castelli, director of the long-running Framingham Heart Study, said only men and women with heart-risk factors should consider regular ASA use, although most people in the United States fall into this category. Dr. Claude Lenfant, director of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, agreed people with heart-risk factors should be considered for ASA therapy, but he said they should discuss use of the drug first with their doctors. And physicians should make sure their patients don't have bleeding disorders that could be worsened by ASA. $6.00 Eaci \< $13. CosNews Photo Island shellfish cleared of dioxin VANCOUVER (CP) — Analysis of recent samples of shellfish caught near Crofton pulp mill on Vancouver Is. land reversed Environment Canada concerns about levels of toxin dioxin in the water, says a ministry official. Fern Hartibuse said Mon. day that officials were alarmed in early January when high levels of the deadly poison dioxin were found in two samples of crabs and oysters caught off Van couver Island. But recent samples proved those con cerns to be unfounded, he said. The environmental group Greenpeace accused the fed eral and provincial govern ments Monday of covering up contamination of shellfish, after it received an internal report on the testing. Hartibuse said the minis. try was not able to confirm earlier results. “We've done a broad scan of the area and the other samples we have do not show the same high levels,” he said. Renate Kroesa, a spokes man for Greenpeace and an industrial chemist, said she isn't satisfied with Harti buse’s assurances. “They may well have pick ed samples farther away, samples not as exposed to the effluent of the Crofton mill. But that doesn’t mean that if I go there tomorrow I won't find high levels.” On Jan. 12, Hartibuse wrote an internal document stating that levels of dioxin in some crab and oyster samp les were higher than the “tolerance” levels — limits low enough that the fish can be safely eaten — set by the federal Health and Welfare Department. The internal document was leaked to Greenpeace, which distributed it to the news media, charging that the ministry is involved in a “coverup” and that British Columbia pulp mills must be forced to stop the discharge of dioxins. Hartibuse said Monday that subsequent analysis of samples from the Crofton area do not contain dioxin levels above the “tolerance” levels. “We've had more oyster samplings from Crof. ton and they were both below the 20 parts per trillion used by health and welfare to @termine what is safe to eat,” said Hartibuse. two Kroesa said Greenpeace believes any level of dioxin is potentially unsafe. taking the work-force dd.
