The players were cured of previously developed bad habits, and exposed to more advanced volleyball strategies SUN SPORTS PHOTO / John Van Putten Castlegar most improved team Local team shows their stuff in Grand Forks tourney Mike Hogan Sterling News Service The Grand Forks Preps (13 year-olds) fell two runs short of capping a perfect baseball long weekend with a tournament crown, losing 15-13 to the Trail Kiwanis in the final game The Kiwanis beat Beaver Val ley, Slocan Valley and Trail Xerox to advance to the final game through the A bracket Grand Forks, after beating Republic in the first round, lost a 7-6 squeaker to Trail Xerox which sent them down to the B bracket of the double knockout toamament Slugging their way through th bottom end Grand Forks sent Castlegar, Penticton and Trail Xerox home before earning the right to face Kiwanis in the final game With Kiwanis playing its fourth game and Grand Forks its sixth both teams struggled with a pitch ing shortage in late innings. Grand Forks gave up an early lead and went to bat in the final inning down 15-8 With five runs scored, two outs, the tying run on base and the win ning run at the plate, the Kiwanis pitcher was up to the task of field ing a pop-up to end the Grand Forks comeback Another highlight of the tourna ment was the strong performance of Slocan Valley. Slocan came back from a seven or eight run deficit to beat Castlegar Pope and Talbot in extra-innings before being sent to the B bracket by Trail Kiwanis Slocan then lost a one-run game to Penticton to be bounced back home While ail the other teams in th tourney were house league teams. Penticton was beaten by two West Kootenay League house teams —Grand Forks and Trail Xerox— but the future of baseball bodes well for this Okanagan community Their outfield was the strongest in the tournament and their hitting the most consistent, The superior ty of West Kootenay pitching was all that stood between victory and defeat for Penticton. The other Castlegar team was the Pressure Wash Squad Following a round-robin format, the top two teams in each division advanced into the play-off round.
