Beginning this September Office Administration at Selkirk College will be offered as a 10 month program leading to an Office A ion certificate 365-7010 or 359-7147 or a Legal Secretary certificate “Students will receive broader based education in a wide range of office skills,” explained Helen McLellan, department head at the Trail Campus. “This new approach will proved a better foundation for career advancement.” The new curriculum is com pletely computer-driven. Days spent mastering highly refined typing skills on a typewriter are a thing of the past. The college's oe STUDENT RESIDENCE ON CASTLEGAR CAMPUS NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS! Being great teasers, they set out to territy the more naive Canadians with tales of legal Serpents and spiders, and other things that crawl and swim and go bump in the night. One of our staff did get extreme ly nervous, much to the enjoyment of the locals who had great fun scaring him half to death with tales of sharks and snakes and the blue-ringed octopus. We were living in a small town where sheep ranching flourished in the surrounding countryside. The staff decided to get together for a trail ride and picnic. They asked my husband did we ride and would we like to join them? Well, we weren't great riders he said, and we had no access to horses or gear, but we would go along. There was no problem, he was told. Horses and gear would be provided. And so, early one Sunday morning we all gathered at a nearby ranch where horses and gear were being assembled for all the would-be trail riders. Mornings in Australia are particularly beautiful. At least on the weekends please. And no matter what your preference, most of us are somewhat thrown off balance by a non-typical sea- son. An especially cold winter will be the topic of conversation for years to come. And ten years from now, legend will have it that the summer of 1993 hosted the finest snowstorm ever to be seen in the Kootenays. Yep, coldest summer since the ice age Something about the change of seasons breeds a familiar com- fort, warm predictability. Sort of like the sun and moon. To be honest, if I ventured out on starry night for a romantic stroll to find two moons gleaning brightly into my eyes, you can bet it would rock my secure foundation just a tad. So it is similar (sort of) with weather patterns slightly off bal- ance to the season. Some of us do things we wouldn't normally do. Possibly we feel “blue” or come down with a case of extended spring fever. Some stay indoors and mope while others stubbomly sit shivering under their ‘sun umbrella, clad in bikinis and like on a deserted sandy beach. One of the most common afflictions, however, is to fall victim to the ‘shopping syndrome’. That nasty little bug thrives in rainy and oth erwise yechy weather. There is no known cure for this malaise of yet, but we're working on it In fact, just the other day, I was conferring with a program administrator who has requested that I deliver my Money Manage- ment Course as part of her cur- riculum. We discussed the possibility of revising the agenda to include greater focus on wise shopping. I pondered on this request and assured her that the course material would pave a nat- ural pathway to this pool of infor- mation sharing. You see, this is no ordinary money management course.
