INVENTORY oe it a pee 2 - 31 © 9:30-5 p.m. Unique Gifts for all occasions BAH...HUMBUG - ANYWAY Submitted by: Pastor Rankin McGougan, New Life Assembly eorge Bernard Shaw had a rather cynical ‘ex pessimistic view of the Christmas season. He is quoted as having said that: “Christmas is forced on us by the shopkeepers and the press, if left to it’s own it would wither and die in the fiery breath of universal hatred!” Well Mr. Shaw I gladly take opposition to your thesis. This mid-winter celebrations existed for millenniums without the aid of the media and/or the merchants. Left to its own it may move in a drastically different direction that would probably be warmly welcomed. Now, I don’t mean to be too hard on dear old Mr. Shaw, but it takes very little creative effort to be negative and cynical about anything and that cynicism will drain you dry Of any every ounce (or 30g if you prefer) of energy for real life. Now I am fully aware that our Christmas season provides us with all the encouragement we need to climb on the “BAH...HUMBUG BAND WAGON”. After all we can expend a lot of energy becoming exasperated over the inroads of secularism, or ranting & raving over the glutenous feasting and the consumption of alcohol, or complaining bitterly about the schedules we have to keep or mustering up our righteous indignation over inappropriateness and excess. If that doesn’t work for us we can always join the ranks of the religious zealots and avoid all association with Christmas by sitting in our ivory tower and brooding ‘till we’re blue in the face about the theological ramifications of how a venerated monk from Licia evolved into an over weigh elf. Or how about frustrating ourselves over the inequities between the have’s and the have not’s or tormenting ourselves over memories of painful Christmases. ST. PETER LUTHERAN WORSHIP TIME 9:00 am SUNDAY SCHOOL 10:15 am 713 - 4th St,, Castlegar Rev. V, Tech + 365-3664 ALL WELCOME! Now I am not going to condone the disasters of the season. But, if we are not careful we will become so focused on them that’ within a few minutes with very little effort we can b this derful that would make Ebeneezer Scrooge look like. Mother Teresa Mr. Grinch look like the original St. Nicholas. Oh, and by the way a spin off benefit of becoming this wonderfully pious pickle is that anyone who comes in contact with us becomes a high risk candidate for contagious misery. But hold on a minute, I need to change directions myself because I’m falling into the same subtle trap by griping about the gripers. Now, the Romans may have used this mid winter festival to celebrate the victory of light over darkness but I don’t blame the early church fathers for choosing a day in the middle of this pagen season to use it to celebrate that the true light of the world had come and that true victory over darkness is found in God’s gift of His Son Jesus. He is still the good news of great joy that was proclaimed by the hosts of heaven and because of that good news we have all the reason in the world to celebrate. He is God with us, He is the Christ, He is the Lord. He is our Saviour it is of Him that we sing, celebrate and fellowship. So don’t stand in line for the Bah-Humbug Bus, set your mind on things above and focus on the God’s gift of grace that was left for us 2000 years ago. Some have failed to claim this gift as their own. Some have carried it around but have failed to unwrap it and receive it’s glories. Some have opened it up and have left it under the tree. Some have taken it unto themselves and it has become a part of them. The Choice is yours Humbug or Hallelujah. Y ST.
