The Velvet mine on Sophie moun- tain has shown up bodies of ore which justify the opinion that it will equal the Le Roi on Red mountain with an equal amount of development. Other mines on Sophie mountain have shown up equally well in proportion to the de- gree of development done, and there is strong evidence that Sophie mountain contains as much min- eral wealth.as Red mountain. The owners of these mines have hitherto done business in Rossland, and are willing to continue to do so, if. the way is made easy for them to come heres But the way has not been made easy to Rossland and the people of. Stevens county, Washington, are making it easy to Northport, in that county, by building a wagon road. The late government spent $7c00 on an uncompleted wagon road, which goes down one mountain only to.climb another and complete the ascent to the Velvet mine with a hideous switchback. This road, being unfinished, cannot be used and is.so badly located that, even if it were finished, it would proba- bly not be used. But there is said, by those familiar with the country, to be a route by which the ascent could be made by easy grades and without a switchback. The question is whether the busi- ness of Sophie mountain, which is rapidly increasing, is to come to Rossland or to be taken across the line to Northport, thus adding an- other to the pieces uf Canadian ter- | necessary to say that if a loan of on the one hand and a trail to Ross- land on the other, they: will not al- low sentiment to stand in_ the way of comfort, ease and . economy. They will take the road and Ross- land will get left. This question must “be settled this ‘summer, it it is to be settled Rossland’s way. The government must change the line of its road, so that it ;will continue to climb when it has once begun. = It 18 the business of Rossland people to convince the government that this must be done. They can. do so by thoroughly examining the.rouite and by stating in a, succinct, forcible shape the merits of the proposed route, the traffic which it is needed to accommodate and the prospec- tive traffic which Sophie mountain. would afford. All this must, be done before the new. legislature meets.on July 5, so that the repre- sentative of this.-riding may go there primed with all data.necessary- to-secure.the appropriation-for _im- mediaté use,» The intervening time is not too long to prepare a strong case. . aoe es : The town which gets. there _first .with.a. wagon “road will get the bus- iness. Rossland must hustle if, she | jatends to'win the race. A FEW COLD. FACTS. x = rary “ Mr. Martin talks so glibly about the ability of the province to borrow money to build his great railroad that the Colonist tells how the pre- vious. provincial loans were raised in order to show the difficulty” of floating another. It says: “When Mr. Turner placed his loan on the market, the public did not want it at .all; when he placed his second loan, the public took a portion of it; but when -Mr. Cotton issued the loan of ‘t899,\ the public did- not bid for any of ‘it. Under these ‘circumstances it is. hardly from $8,000,000 to $20,000,000 were placed upop the market to be of the drainage and navigation can- als on the waterlevel of the great lakes, Having failed to obtain an en- dorsement from Sir Wilfrid Laurier, the-latter, accusing him of standing in with monopoly, Yet he. poses as the Liberal leader of the province. R. -and certain to be non-paying for some time at least, the public would not be likely to bid for it. For this reason the whole loan would have to be’placed with underwriters, who would have to sustain the value of our stock in the market, in order that the value of their security might rot be de- preciated. To enable them to hold up the value of such a large issue, it would be necessary for them to get the loan at a large enough margin to leave a profit against any event- ualities; but the mere fact that the selling price to the underwriters was low would have a’tendency to depreciate the stock at once.” These are cold, hard.facts for those who. are enamored of Mr. Martin's government ~ railroad scheme to digest. EDITORIAL NOTES. The Prince of Wales’ race horses seem to be all mascots this year. , As the government has a surplus ot $7,500,000 this year, it might, get tid of a little of it by abolishing the duty on paper. A big surplus. is almost as great an evil as a de- ficit. The Rscorp says this on theory only, for newspapers are rarely afflicted with a surplus. Ernest Ta-ra-ra Hooley has come to the surface again in Russia, with agrard scheme. The czar may be adirector. . The News-Advertiser calculdtes that, even if Mr. Martin. were to se- cure the $10,000,000 needed to build his Coast-Kootenay railroad, provision would have to be made by taxation for at least $500,000 interest on that sum while the road was under construction.
