But what's a Hollywood mass-appeal flick without a handsome, happy-go-lucky hunk? 4 Lucas's space age Star Wars series had its roguish knight-errant, Han Solo (Harrison Ford), and sure enough, the hokey Middle Ages epic Willow has its own rowdy warrior-knight: Madmartigan, played by the suitably strapping Val Kilmer. Mad is big, with a glossy set gf oft-displayed pecs and raven hair down to his hips. The way Lucas has him rigged up, he looks like a cross between an Apache brave and a samurai warrior. In this sword-and-sorcery fantasy, Madmartigan is a down-and-out Daikini (Big People) warrior slated to rot in a human-sized bird-cage for thieving. But into his path happens the good-hearted Willow Ufgood, a shy’ farmer from the peaceable Nelwyn race of little people. Willow has found a baby girl of the Daikini race and he's trying to return her to her people, but the girl is a princess who has been marked for death by the evil Queen Bavmorda. Together, the caring Willow and the daring Madmartigan overcome an onslaught of ugly trolls, death dogs and thundering horses. LITTLE THOUGHT “The role didn't require a great deal of thought or preparation,” admits the 28-year-old Kilmer in a telephone interview from New York. “Eat, sleep and find a woman. “The guy's not exactly complicated.” Previous to his top-billed role in Willow, Kilmer played a test pilot in Top Gun and a rock star in the comedy Top Secret. In Willow, his performance has an easygoing comic tone, a kind of klutzy charm that reminds one of the bar owner (Ted Danson) in the TV series Cheers. But the gumb-hunk shtik is all acting on Kilmer's part. The youngest student ever accepted into New York's Juilliard School (he was 17), Kilmer is a playwright and published poet. He is currently making a documentary on the nuclear arms issue with some footage shot in the Soviet Union. This summer will find the actor playing Hamlet at the Colorado Shakespeare Festival. “My training is classical theatre and that's my main interest,” he says, adding that his role in Top Gun was “like a modelling. job.” Kilmer says his classical theatre training helped his Kom >/a) OL) Answer to Sunday, May 22 Cryptoquip: ‘ INHIBITED PERSON COULDN'T LET HIS HAIR DOWN BECAUSE HE WAS TIED UP IN NOTS.
