And. it was on the slopes of Red and Granite -.'mountains that a young akier ” who was to’ become world : champion learned her sport, Now ‘the stories of the mines and of Nancy Greene are told graphically in the exhibits at the Rossland Museum and Le __ Rol Mine. The miners’ story came first, In July of 1890, prospec- tors Joe Bourgeois and Joc Morris staked five claims on Red Mountain. They went to Nelson to register their claims, giving one of them—the Le Wise—to the deputy mining recorder instead of paying him the $12.60 recording fee. In one of those ironies that abound in British Columbia's mining history, the Le Wi renamed the Le Roi—turned out to be the richest of the five claims, yielding $30 million in gold and copper ore in its 40 years of activity, The mining recorder sold his interest for Outside Displays Greet Visitors Before Entering Actual Mine Harboring Man-eating Piranhas Five man-eating piranha— outlawed in Florida—are swim- ming around in someone's home fish tanks after being mis- takenly sold as docile little red pacus to four pet shops. You: Are : ‘with’ bulbous toes and Nin Falling “head over heels" in love is not just a foolish romantic idea, but a medica! fact, according to a doctor. Human «sexuality stems from the foot, says Dr. Willlam: Rossi in his new book, The Sex Life Of The Foot And Shoe. “The foot is. responsible for the emergence of most of the erogenous zones ‘of the body,” added ‘the 57-year-old podiatrist who has been collect- ing fascinating facts about feet. for years, Dr. Rossi says that in modern times, the shoes men and women wear reveal their sexual personalities, “Americans spend $11 bil- Non annually for footwear,” Dr. Rossi says, “and 80 per cent of “the vhoes bought are for sex attraction purposes.” Dr. Rossi divides shoes into four categories—sexy, neu- ter, sexless, and unisex, Men's shoes come in five categories—sensuous, mascul- line, eunuch, macho, and pea- cock, “The sexy shoe for women is the half undressed shoe,” Dr. Rossi ‘said. “An example is a stripped sandal with high heels, “But merely opening the toe doesn’t automatically put it in the sexy class. A flat- heeled, grubby sandal is by no means sexy. “Boots can be sexy for women—provided they are leg- clinging. “The neuter shoe is the plain, often tied-shoe. “It's usually utilitarian and always sexually passive. Second on the list: A heavy. progrés- sive or graduated incoine tax. Don't look now, but we've got it. And it’s working as foretold by * Marx and Engels, eee Like death, "taxes are ~ inevitable. But the method of taxation is subject to change. We may think that -« because, former Finance f; Minister Edgar Benson's ‘\’ “reforms” are only five years old it's too soon to change them. On the con- trary, it’s almost too late! eee We've become so ac- customed, though not re- conciled. to. taxes that we're concerned less with changing the system than with finding ways to beat it. A'great army of accoun- tants and lawyers is de- ployed to help business- men make the most of tax “incentives”. and special allowances. There is no such thing as a tax incen- tive. Each and every tax is a disincentive. There are only >forms of relief from tax disincentives, eee In a. profit-oriented economy the emphasis should be on cutting costs. But when profits are taxed at 50 per cent, the in- clination is to spend more, because business costs “are only 50-cent dollars". Our whole economy is no Jonger profit-oriented but tax-oriented. eco A positive, alternative approach is proposed in a private research study by JRF Financial C ‘be taxed -not on’ profits but on the basis of Net Business Costs, Then the incentive would be on cutting costs in order to increase profits. The tax system would re- inforce sound business prineiplss rather than them, as it does ae eee Instead- of ;: making: business decisions for tax reasons, businessmen would make them for business reasons. Taxing profits favors inefficient companies at the expense of efficient ones-the more efficient, the more tax. In a final absurdity, the state then uses tax monies from efficient companies to sub- sidize failing ones — the free lunch philosophy again. @eoe Taxing costs would put everyone, including Crown corporations and foreign branch plants, on the same competitive footing. The study indicates that a tax of five per cent on net business costs would pro- duce more revenue than taxing profits; enough ‘to reduce personal income ‘tax and eliminate ‘sales taxes.
