CASTLEGAR “Voice of the People NEWS, Thursday, March 8, 1977 They Do Return Keys {vEditor, Castlegar News: : I would like to give a public + thank you to the T.B, and Chest ‘+ Disabled Veterans’ Association, ~ Twice in my lifetime I have had keys returned—the second time : just last week. ..) Of course, I have to thank + the person who took the trouble to pick them up and drop them Hin the mail box, too, so that is why a letter to the Editor, The thought occurred to me that writing a letter to the local paper might remind some- one who hasn't sent his/her ‘contribution to the Disabled Veterans’ Association to do just that, It is one way I could siy thank you to the veterans, Arlee Anderson Castlegar Like the Man Says -- {Chris Psomas of Seattle, ‘ 1 Wash. discovered the best way ‘to sell rice pudding is to grab a ‘few people off the street and force them to try a sample. “At first everyone was “surprised,” says Psomas, “and [ think I even embarrassed some people into coming in. They -must have wondered, ‘What kind of nut is he?" * Five months ago Psomas sat in his lonely rice pudding factory—"the only rice pudding factory in the world,” he says— counting the cars go by; some- times as many as four or five thousand a day. Nobody was buying the ‘rice pudding, which took a life- time to perfect. Psomas sold only about a pound a day. A few months earlier he had sold a prosperous lunch: eonette in Woodside, N.Y., packed up his belongings and moved 3,000 miles to Seattle to pour his savings into what some people called “a mighty risky venture”. : “Td sit around like an idiot counting cars ... until it hit me,” Psomas recalls. “Then I started calling people in off the streets. The Canadian Cancer Soc- iety urges all women to leam and practise breast sclf-exam- indtion regularly as an effec- tive way of screening for breast cancer. a Try It! You'll Like it! “Somebody would walk by and I'd jump up and fling open the door and say, ‘Hi! How are you doing? Would you like to come in and taste some of our pudding? " Almost every day Psomas could be found standing in his doorway, silver tray in hand filled with little paper cups full or rice pudding. Psomas would extol its virtues to anyone who would listen—no preservatives, only the freshest, purest in- gredients. 2 “I kept on because I knew the only way to get this thing to the people was by letting them ite it.” Now the “Just Delicious Rice Pudding Factory” is a fre- quented and much-talked-about place. Psomas’ pudding {s sold in 15 groceries, He markets as much as 900 pounds in a single day. 2 A little “erazy" behavior gan be pretty profitable, he says, Psomas even has some “regulars”—like the jogger who runs by in the late afterncon, handing Psomas some money as he lopes by on the first of his run. On the way back, the con- tainer of rice pudding is waiting for pick-up. Even if the shop is closed, the pudding is tucked away on a ledge of a nearby fence. Unless such an entrepreneur sets up shop in his basement (providing it’s commercially zoned) he is facing the land speculators head on, For example: a worn and broken building sits on a wooded acre nearly across the street from City Hall. A legal firm on Granville Street in Vancouver advised me that it would be willing to sell the one acre for $530,000. It took me perhaps three seconds to reply. ‘The general market price for} ‘most lots on Columbia and Seventh are holding steady at $25,000 for ‘a’'50-foot frontage. i You may wisely ask, well how about the shopping centre? Most small specialty shops usually stare into space when they are informed: "Yes, we have space available at $1 000 per month for a Hare concrete room big enough to nce.” Treatly cannot blame the land developers and shopping mall builders—most people * do seem to be drawn to view and shop at stores that display acres of merchandise. But I wonder where this leaves the little guy who just wants to make a reasonable and fair living running:his own little shop. i } + know. that Castlegar has dozens of people who would like to be “their own boss", but where, oh where, do they find a place to set up busin 5 It is sometimes much easier to work for a big outfit where someone else will worry about bookkeeping and sales and purchasing and union contracts. It is nicer to know you are one of a 700-man team. But I don’t think any of us should overlook the fact that all the small businesses in Castlegar have a total payroll that exceeds that of CanCel. Tam also quite aware of the fact that ingestion of the million-and-a-half CanCel payroll is vital to this community. ‘But how about 80 more small businesses employing 10 people each and making it unnecessary to shop in | Spokane for the things you cannot find here in Castlegar?. d either old ess? big city items. Ifyou are a little guy who wants to be his own boss and has a good idea to make a few bucks and be of service to his fellow citizens, then stand up, and be counted. into mini-shops or some single land speculator may step forward to build “small shopping centres” that will rent for realistic prices to small merchants who would tend to’specialize in the hard-to-get painting, etc., please leave your . — naimes at the church ‘office. : : : re.
