corr CASTLEGAR NEWS, Thursday, March 3, 1977 * Pulpit pes Pew 3 By Pastor Donald W. Reed My wife sub- seribes to and regularly reads The National Ob- server. She fre- quently calls arti- qs cles to my at- tention which she feels have fornian sociologists Vern Beng: ston and Alan Acock. Their firm conclusion is that it's the father who most influences the church attendance and sense of plety of his adolescent. * This conclusion is based on a survey of more than 2,000 particular for meas a clergyman. Just the other day she clipped out an item headed, "Do the Kids Worship? Give Dad the Credit." The article was written by Michael Putney, and has a Los Angeles dateline. It is a freely recognized fact that the traditional roles of men and women have. changed “dramatically in the last decade. What is somewhat surprising is that so, evidently, has the influence each parent exerts on his offspring, including the area of religion. Social scientists and so- ciety at large have generally assumed that mothers most influence their children's churchgoing habits. Though that may have been the case in the past, it is no longer true according to Southern Cali- ofa i Cali- fornia prepaid health-care plan. The subscribers to the plan were predominantly blue-collar workers, though their children and grandchildren, also sur- veyed, were better educated and higher paid. “We found, quite to our surprise, that in almost every area but religion the adolescent and young adult children were more likely to be closer in their attitudes to the mother than to the father," Bengston reported. Typical -areas were race, the work ethic and militarism. Only” in the area of religion did the father's attitude most match the children's. It reminds me of the youngster who was being hus- tled off to Sunday School by his father. The tad's question at that point was rather illuminat- ing. “Dad, when will 1 be old enough to stay home’ from - Sunday Schoo! too?” I've always maintained that it is the height of hy- Pocracy for parents to send their children to Sunday Schoo! and church while being unwill- ing to attend themselves. T maintain too, and this is especially apropos to this col- umn, that the husband and father who patronizingly waves goodbye to his wife and chil- dren as they leave each Sunday morning for the church is not only setting a pathetic example for his family but is reneging in his responsibility as the spirit- ual leader in the home. Who really is the weaker sex? Anyway, the Observer ar- tical ended on a positive note. “Some of the anguished concern over the fragmentation of the family has been. over- stated. Our research is just one more piece of evidence that the family continues to be a vital institution and the most im- portant interpersonal influence. Even with rapid social change, . there still seems to be a good deal of family influence.” Dr. Carson’s Bible Lectures Plea for Christian Obedience A plea for Christian obe- dience was the theme of Dr.. Don Carson's Bible lectures on the Sermon on the Mount presented at Calvary Baptist Church. “We must first acknowl- edge our personal bankruptcy, before Christ can redeem us,” he said, “We must become ‘ ‘poor in spirit' and realize that we Cathedral Grove have no moral attributes to commend us to God,” he stated referring to the first Beatitude in Matthew 5:3, He stressed that the Ser- mon on the Mount is not an “incoherent collection of do- goodisms.” No amount of turn- ing over new leaves or gritting our teeth will: enable us to follow the commands set down by Christ here, such as loving one’s enemies and “turning the other cheek.” It is only when we ask, and keep on asking Christ for these virtues will they be given to us, Carson asserted. These lectures, which dealt with Matthew 5, 6, and 7, were held on five consecutive evé nings with many attending from other churches. He used the Bible as his supreme authority and quoted often from it. Those who attended where challenged and many renewed commitments to Christ. Dr. Carson, who received his doctorate from Cambridge University in England, is cur- ._Fently-the ‘dean of the North: west: Baptist Theologig ae - nary in Vancouver lives with his wife Joy. A potluck supper was given Friday for the Carsons before the evening session. Six young people from the church went to the Northwest Baptist College in Vancouver this past weekend where they toured the campus, sat in on classes and mingled with the students. The teens, who were vhe transported in cars by Pastor - Reed and Mr. Wally Walper, left on Thursday morning and arrived back on Sunday after- noon.
