You have to put some- thing in before you can take anything out.” —The Old Fisherman 8 8 If you're just beginning the sport of steclheading, this old saying can help keep you from getting discouraged as you work on the first and probably most important of the basics of steelheading — how to read a river. The three other basics are knowing steelhead habits, knowing how to handle a rod and reel; and knowing how to use various baits and lures, This matter of reading a river is of the utmost impor- tance, for it lets you fish where - the fish are apt to be. Without this knowledge, you can cast much of the time in water that will seldom hold fish, Even the good spots don't always have fish, so there's no use casting where they won't be, except in rare instances. You can learn a lot about reading rivers by reading stories in newspaper columns, magazine articles and books about steelhead. That's a good Herb Williams pes start, but it's like riding a bicycle. You only learn by doing. You have to go fishing, putting in that time, like putting money in your fishing account, Once out on the river, the best way to learn is to have a steelhead catcher — someone who catches these wary fish regularly — take you in hand and point out good water. Next best is to simply watch where others catch steelhead and then either work that same spot later or seek out similar spots along a river. The third way is to cast to places which look like the ones you read about, This is the slowest way, but over a period of time pays off. You will catch fish in some places and not others, thus learning to read a river. One problem with this do- it-yourself approach is that many of the places on a river aren't the classic “typical” spots described ‘by writers, who sometimes make it sound too simple. Every angler has had the experience of never catch- ing a fish in some of the best looking water, while finding fish time after time in what appears to be marginal or mediocre water. Some “typical” spots will be covered in later columns. + * 8 Don't space mallard decoys. evenly or closely. Bozek Picked Hockey Wildcat Of the Week Steve Bozek, a jh By ROY GOETTING Castlegar Jr. Rebels com- pleted the first half of their home season with a one-sided victory over Nelson Junior Maple Leafs Saturday at the Regional Recreation Complex, The 7 to 8 score could just as easily have been 10 to 1. Nelson never did get in the game after the five-minute mark of the second period. The Rebels outshot the Leafs 63 to 22. Out of our first 10 home games this year, Trail has won two and Kimberley one, (the Kimberley game in overtime). The other seven have been Rebel victories. Our club is improving every game out, Take the game against Nelson — seven goals, from six players. Larry Ingham played goal for the Rebels and even though it seemed that the Maple Leafs were trying harder for penal- ties than for goals, especially in the second period, he came up with some good saves. Bruce Martin put the Reb- els on the d 26 sec- Seven Wins in 10 Games at Home Rebels Walk Over Maple Leafs 18:06 from Colin Ward and brother Ron Sherstobitoff. In the second period, Nel- son was short-handed when Marc Centrone got five minutes for boarding. He was barely back on the ice when Brad Carlson received two minutes for slashing, followed by Terry Maglio, who got two minutes for interference, The Rebels were not able to capitalize by scoring during any of the aforementioned pen- allies, At 18:40, Terry Strelioff put the Rebels ahead 3 to 1, assisted by Mike Nevakshonolf and Ron Sherstobitoff. The Rebels played the second pe- riod without getting penalties. They were unable to score during the prolonged period when they had the man advantage, but they took the momentum of the game into the third period and were able to ‘score four more goals. ‘The score at the end of the second period was Rebels 3, . Bozek was cited by the Wildcat coaching staff for his efforts in a pair of 4-1 losses to nationally ranked Bowling Green recently. “He was consistently the hardest worker we had over the two games," is the way head coach Rick Comley ex- pressed it. Bozek started the season at center for the Wildcats, then was switched to wing for the Bowling Green series. “Steve's a versatile player who can be used at left wing or center,” said Comley. “We think he’s developing very well and turning into a valuable player for us.” Bozek played two seasons 4 for the Castlegar Rebels of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League. His club won # the league title both seasons J and in 1977-78 he was both team and league playoff MVP. At 2:12, Castlegar's Colin Ward got a two-minute penalty for tripping and Nel- son's Mike Jones scored a power play goal at 2:37. The game remained tied until Reb- els’ Ken Sherstobitoff scored at Terry Halisheff and Tim Mc- Donald at 3:12. Tim McDonald is turning out to be a real asset to the club — a good defense man who can carry the puck — just what we needed, and not one penalty. Bruno Tassone played the whole game without a visit to the penalty box, also, Good work, boys! Keep it up. Nelson scored their second goal of the game‘ on a power play at 5:24 while Dave Kani- gan was serving a five-minute cross-checking penalty. Terry Halisheff scored the Rebels’ fifth goal at 9:41 from Dave Kanigan. From this point on, Nelson proceeded to get one penalty after another. At one point they had five players in the penalty box at one lime. Mike Nevakshonoff scored the Rebels’ sixth goal at 14:37 from Ron Sherstobitoff and Dave Kanigan. Then at 19:27, Greg Moroso, in his first year asa junior, got our seventh and final goal of the game, un- assisted. It's sure nice to see all three lines getting goals. Our next home game won't be until Dec. 15 against the Rossland Warriors. Maloney's “Scoro” will be worth $105; Castlegar Drugs’ puck luck will be worth $45; and nine other prizes will be offered, from steak dinners to hamburgers — all included in the price of the program. The Castlegar Rebels’ executive has just concluded arrangements with Team B.C, 79 to host an exhibition game to be held Dee. 21 at the Regional Recreation Complex in Castlegar. This team will consist of outstanding junior “B"e players from all over British Columbia. Our own Bruno Tassone will be trying for a spot on this team, Dec, 21 is a Thursday, so game time will be 8 p.m. It is hoped that the Rebel team may dress some illustrious ex: Rebels, who will be home for the Christmas holidays, But nothing regarding our .added players is definite at this time.
