“This land is your land, this land is my land, from
Bonavista to Vancouver Island.”

The opening line of the popular Canadian folk song is
also the goal of 56-year-old Hildegard Buschhaus, who
began a cross-Canada walk for the blind Jate last month.
Only Hildegard is heading from Vancouver Island to
Bonavista.

Hildegard set out March 20 from Tofino on the west
coast of Vancouver Island where she dipped her 10 toes

— one for each province she will be walking through —*

into Pacifie waters. She hopes to dip her toes in the
Atlantic Ocean off Bonavista, Nfld. by the end of
September.

On Wednesday afternoon, Hildegard and husband
Gunter, who is accompanying her with a car and trailer,
walked through Castlegar where she was greeted by
Mayor Audrey Moore and half a dozen local residents.

The artist from Coombs (near Parksville on
Vancouver Island) is hoping that her walk will “help build
bridges of hope and understanding”. She also hopes it
“contributes to the promotion of an awareness of the

funds collected for these blind agencies are used for
curing and preventing blindness. Much of the money is
used to finance sight restoration and blindness

Before reaching Castlegar, Hildegard’s walk had
raised more than $2,500. The couple doesn't have a fund
raising goal.

Hildegard remarks that she wouldn't want to be
disappointed if they set a goal that wasn't met, while too
low a goal would limit them.

During their walk, motorists stop along the road
“wanting to know what it's all about”, says Hildegard.
She adds that motorists usually give donations —
anywhere from $2 up to $20. One person along the way
donated $50, she recalls.

During her trek from the Blueberry Paulsen area to
Castlegar on Wednesday, Hildegard reached the 1,000

services to the blind” as provi: by rep and
charitable organizations.

These organizations include The Canadian National
Institute for the Blind, The Christian Blind Mission
International, Operation Eyesight, and the Canadian
Couneil of the Blind.

It’s Hildegard’s hope that the walk will cause
Canadians to become aware of the needs of the blind and
to raise money through donations which will then go to
the various agencies that offer services to the blind.

Hildegard herself is not blind.

“I can see very well,” said the West German native,
while taking a break in their trailer on Highway 3
about 10 kilometres west of Castlegar.

But Hildegard adds that she has relatives and close
friends who are blind.

“I am an artist,” she explains. “I enjoy everything so
much with my eyes. I can't imagine to be without sight.”

Hildegard, who is both a painter and a sculptor,
brought along a display of her stone sculptures. She also
brought along her painting supplies in case she gets the
urge to dabble along the way.

“I never was in the hospital or had a serious
sickness,” Hildegard says. However, she said through her
walk for the blind she feels she is repaying ittle bit” to
those who are not as lucky as she.

When she thought about walking across Canada, one

mark of the 7,500-kilometre journey.

She averages between 45 and 50 kilometres a day
and begins walking at 5:30 a.m.

She is no newcomer to walking. That much was
evident by a display of medals she showed local residents
during her stop in Castlegar. She won the medals for
walking races in West Germany.

“I always loved walking as a child,”
during a brisk walk into Castlegar.

Although she admits it was never a lifetime goal to
walk across Canada, she said she wanted to do a
long-distance walk.

Hildegard made sure she was in shape for the trip.
Between January and March 20 she walked three to four
times a week, clocking a total of 725 kilometres. But she
admits it’s easier walking across Canada than it was
simply practicing, because now she has a goal.

Hil will try her hardest to make it to
Newfoundland before Sept. 15 — if she doesn't, she'll miss
a ferry which shuts down for the winter on that day —
and that could mean walking an extra 643 kilometres.

After departing from Castlegar, Hildegard and
Gunter headed for Nelson where they were to cross on
the Kootenay Lake Ferry at Balfour.

They will stay on Highway 3 until they reach
Medicine Hat when they will take the Trans-Canada
Highway the rest of the way.

The inertia, mental and physical, which accompanies a
bad cold, and the return to good weather, and which brings
out all the golf bugs all over the links, has presented me with
an opportunity to reprint an old and favorite column.

I wrote it in 1954 in the Castle News column “Just
Looking, Thank you,” by EGO, when I was teaching in
Victoria for a couple of years. I take considerable pleasure
now in dedicating it to my friend, a man for all seasons, right
good fellow and occasional golfer, Alex Lutz.

You'll never guess the awful truth after all these years,
I've discovered golf. While on the Island — Vancouver of
course, where else, “old boy” — I saw a golf course within
walking distance of where I was occupied in other endeavors
and, since the price of club rental and “green fee” was within
range of my pocket book, I decided to show them how easy
the whole thing is, really.

It was a simple step therefore, to where I found myself
in the temporary possession of one bag of golf clubs
(assorted), a number of tees (varicolored little “jiggers” for
balancing the golf ball on) and several golf balls (second
hand).

It was another equally simple step to where I found
myself teamed with a short, plump gentleman called “Larry”
on the first tee and placing a golf ball on one of the “jiggers”
aforementioned

Perhaps I should explain at this point that I had never
before been on a golf course, but from watching the pros do
their stuff on the news reels and sport shorts, I knew
instinctively that I was a natural born expert myself.

In fact I discovered to my horror that to ensure himself

Passing off the matter nonchalantly I adopted the
correct stance again, gave the club a few expert wigwags to
loosen my wrist (in my earlier eagerness I had omitted this
vital precaution), aimed carefully, drew back the club,
keeping my eye fixed on the ball (no one was going to pull

hat switcheroo on me twice) and unleashed a 250 yard
cowuthouse drive on that ball

The ball and I watched fascinated as the club whistled
ever closer to the ball. In the instant before the drive of the
year, that coward ball cringed. I swear it did. I saw it with
my own eyes.

The club meanwhile kept on going and wound itself
lovingly around my neck.

“Too bad,” said my partner again,
You should always keep it straight.”

The coward. He wasn't going to admit the truth and
give himself away. Not he

Murmuring politely to cover my rage and concern over
this base lack of sportsmanship I readdressed the ball,
determined that skill and intelligence would surmount petty
difficulties. Again I adapted the correct stance. Again I took
careful aim, watching the ball closely all the while, and
directed a short, powerful blow at the ball with a view to
catching it unawares.

Fast as I was that craven sphere was a little faster so
that I just caught it a glancing blow as it was ducking down.
It rolled about five yards — to the side.

“That's better,” said my partner secretly hugging
himself. “But you didn’t stand close enough to the ball.”

What did he want me to do, breathe down its neck?

Having offered this gratuitous advice he then teed up
his own balls, went through various ridiculous wriggling and
contortions plus several false starts and struck the ball with
a clean “click” sound. The ball sailed down the fairway like a

My partner shrugged and grinned. “It happens every
time,” he observ: now let's see what we can do with that
ball of yours.”

He wasn't a bad fellow, really, and my play improved as
I lost that ball on the next stroke, substituted another and
eventually reached the first hole

It's quite a fascinating game. We played the following
day and the two days after that while my score improved by
leaps and bounds. At the end of four days I was doing
famously and was shooting 68 — for nine holes that is.
