However, not everyone is going to be celebrating the festive season in the bosom of their own family; there are quite a number, in fact, who will be celebrating their first Christmas with their temporary adoptive families and in sometimes radically different cutlures and conditions. Among these are a growing group of exchange students Rotary and World Youth — who are both broadening their own horizons and making one more contribution to what this season is all about — peace on earth and goodwill toward mankind. On behalf of this writer, as well as on behalf of the community at large, I would like to offer the following Rotary Exchange students our warmest greeting for the Christmas season and h for a most fulfilling New Year: Rishia McDowell in Tokyo, Japan; Mac Lamb in Cuidad del Carmen, Mexico; Claudia Bramen, somewhere near Dusseldorf, Germany; Donna Wolff in Brasilia, Brazil; Susan Ross in Australia; John Walton in Stanger, South Africa; Louise Devin, our visiting student from Boonah, Australia; Masaru Yanagawa from Tokyo: Vanessa Cue from the Phillipines; Dorita Aceves of Oaxaca, Mexico; and to Kathie Laktin, who is being sponsored by the Castlegar Lions under the Canada World Youth Program for a three months working and help experience in Columbia We have several letters for eventual publication, but for this column we have selected one to represent all. It is from Rishia McDowell and is an edited version (by her mother) of several that she has sent since August. I enjoyed it and I trust that my readers will, too. . . . Hello, gaijin family (gaijin means “foreigner”) Aug. 26: Everything is OK here. The flight to Japan was relatively uneventful, except one of my bags didn’t arrive until the next flight. And there at Narita Airport with sunny smiles were Kimiko and her mother and two sisters, Mr. and Mrs. Yanagawa, Otosan Ino (host father), and Kikuji-san (my counsellor). What a greeting! Had to rush that same day to a summer camp for exchange students. For this, I needed some of the things in the bag that hadn't arrived yet. Otosan asked me what was in that bag, so I began reciting: “bathing suit, towel, soap, toothbrush ..." It was my first mistake. He bought me another of each thing. I felt so guilty. Thank heaven I forgot to mention perfume and jewelry! Anyway, the same day we took my bags (minus one) to my new home. (Own room, TV, read bed (not futon) and ghetto blaster.) Got stuck in rush hour. Took 3'/ hours to go across Tokyo. Then, the same day with Otosan, I took the train to Kichijyoji and then with Kikuji-san took Shimkansen (bullet train) to Numazu on the seacoast about 120 km south of Tokyo. There, we and lots of other exchange COMMUNITY NEWS __e John Charters .. . _ Reflections & recollections SPECIAL GREETING .. . Rishia McDowell of Robson greeted at Tokyo's Narita Airport in August by Kimiko Mitobe, a popular exchange student here in 1985-86. students stayed at a traditional ryokan (inn) next to the ocean, complete with shoji screens, tatami mats, futons ete. Orientation that night (ie., Harada-san said something in Nippon-go (Japanese) for / hour and we (inbounds-about 10) nodded, smiled and said, “Arigato” (thank you). The next day, we went dragnet fishing off the shore. Took pictures and will send. It is so hot and sticky here. We ate the fish raw, of course. It's actually quite palatable. You have to drown it in o-shoyn, (soya sauce), gulp your ocha (tea) and follow it with ahashi (chop-stick) full of gohan (rice). On Aug. 28, I returned to my new home. My host family is all very kind. My host father’s businesses are: 1 Owner of a construction company. He showed me plans for a new apartment house — 100 units. 2. Owner of two restaurants called “Annies” with little Orphan Annie as mascot. 3. Half-owner (with brother) of a bar and night club in Roppongi, a fancy area of downtown Tokyo. 4. Owner of a golf pro shop and driving range. My two host sisters are very sweet. The older one Yoshiko, works for All Nippon Airways. The younger one, Noriko is a university student. Despite their, obvious wealth, they don't have any “hired help.” We all take turns washing dishes and doing household chores. You'll be glad to hear my room is spotless and Oka san (host mother) lets me do my own laundry September: All month, studied Japanese at Nichibei, my language school. There are gaijins there and I suspect we'd learn more Japanese if we weren't together. When I get home from lessons, Otosan sits me down and goes through pages of verbs. He is very patient My evenings are usually spent taking in Japanglish with my family. Despite many tempiations to be spoiled, I'm trying hard not to let that happen. The only thing I'm expected to do is study hard and try to speak Japanese. Everytime I speak an entire sentence, my family all applaud, smile, and then correct me. We're getting along so well! They're wonderfully patient — and as soon as I learn enough Nippo-go I'll be able to tell them so! I'm glad I came. But Canada's my home and I miss it very much. October: So much has happened in the last few days. I've started school (Seikei High School — a co-educational private school — Masaru’s school). My first day's schedule was: Math, English, P.E., and two hours of Japanese tutoring. My class travels around in one large group of about 45 kids from class to class. There are eight such classes in our school, all at the same level of instruction. The kids are all really friendly. I love it here! Sometimes for hours on end I don't understand what anyone is saying. English is easy, of course. I read to them a lot. P.E. is great fun. Today we're doing aerobic dancing. Calligraphy class is great. I'm learning Kanji (a third alphabet) slowly. My social studies class is called “Modern Society.” I have trouble understanding much of what is said about that. I've been permitted to take a French class instead of Physics. Yesterday, I went to a concert produced by Seikei High students. It was just incredible. They did an Italian opera, complete with rolling R's. I was so impressed by their musicianship. You'd be amazed at how often we change shoes here. I have a special pair just for walking to and from school. Then I have a pair to wear in classrooms and halls. Another pair for outdoor P.E. classes, another pair for indoor P.E. classes, and, finally, slippers to wear into the bathroom. It's like that at home, too. Shoes off at the door. Slippers for wood floors, socks on carpet but I must never go in the kitchen without slippers. I also have backyard shoes. It took me quite a while to get used to changing shoes all the time. I still make mistakes, but I'm learning. I've joined a sports club that has a weight room and aerobics every Wednesday, so I'll go their faithfully. I've managed to keep my weight the same, but my muscles are dying for exercise. Swim club starts next month. They were shocked to hear your times, Ariel. Satako asked me: “Is she on Olympic team?” November: I've been going to tea ceremony lessons quite regularly. It’s so funny to see the little lady who teaches it yell in frustration at these huge foreigners who can't even fold a tea cloth. She babbles to herself in Japanese about how it annoys her when we complain about our legs falling asleep. I guess we're just supposed to suffer in silence I plan to start Judo lessons and Kendo soon. Swim team is ruled out by time and expense. First of all, I'd have to travel by train to the practice pool — $1.75 each way. Then I'd have to pay $100 for a team suit and swim cap, plus $100 a month for pool rental and coaching. The thing that blows me away is people actually can afford to join. Everything here is so expensive. Coffee costs $3 a cup. I drink tea.
