The West Kootenay National Exhibition Centre will
present a talk entitled A History of Sternwheelers and

“The producers of Perfect
Strangers came to me when I
was doing Sara. I was afraid I
wouldn't be able to do the
show.

“They didn't tell me he
would be a goat herder,” he

says. “They said they wanted ”

ibly positive, upbeat attitude
about America. The show at
that time was called Green-
horn.

“I said they were thinking
of Beverly Hills Cop, in which
I did a mangled Israeli ac-
cent. I said I didn't want to do
the accent again.

“Serge was very snotty
and it was a kind of joke on
Beverly Hills. But later ‘I
spent two months in Greece
and talked to a lot of people
there and listened to their
aceents and came back
enthusiastic about it.”

When Pinchot was hired
for Beverly Hills Cop, the
character had been called
Jacques.

“The year before I was so
desperate I went to a sem-
inar on catering run by a man
named Serge,” he says. “He
told us to call him Serge. like
the cloth, not Sir-gay.

Novel based on reality

In the oil patch of John Ballem’s imagination, personal,
political and corporate hinati enjoy a if
presence in the bedroom as well as the boardroom

But while the Calgary lawyer-cum-novelist admits to
some exaggeration, he says his steamy new novel Oil Patch
Empire is rooted in reality.

“I tried to make it a good representation of what takes
place in these office towers in Calgary,” Ballem said in an
interview.

“These are high-living people. They work hard and they
play hard. I'm not suggesting that everyone in the business
carries on in that fashion, but I think the flavor is very

Ballem, who has written seven novels, has been an
oil-patch lawyer for years. He's also been on close terms with
political power brokers like former Alberta premier Peter
Lougheed, with whom he used to share a law practice.

NOT CHARITABLE

But that doesn't mean Ballem is particularly charitable
toward his peers; many of the oilmen in the book come
across as sinister, while most of his government figures are
blatantly dim-witted.

“That's a bias that I and a lot of people have,” Ballem,
said of his disdain for politicians. “The oil industry in
Western Canada is a prime example of what governments
should not do. They decided they were going to use this
industry as a power tool, as a lever for their own ideas of
policy. And they literally brought this industry to its knees.
I don't admire politicians when they get into areas like that.”

Oil Patch Empire is the story of Calgary tycoon Bill
Crawford, his family, his associates and his enemies.

When the father and son are united in the end, the
young man inexpicably decides to forgive and forget on the
basis of a brief business meeting with the man he has
considered a ruthless fiend for years.

TOUCH OF GLAMOR

In its favor, the book does inject a sort of Dynasty or
Dallas-like glamor into such locations as Calgary, Vancouver
and the Arctic Sea

Oil Patch Empire is not Ballem’s first fictional foray into
the oil justry. His first novel, The Devil's Lighter. was
about a well blowout in northern Alberta while Alberta
Alone took a look at the province's energy war with Ottawa.

Ballem said there are times when combining his two
careers has proved difficult.

“But I treat the law business as having the first
priority,” he said. “Quite frequently, I'll have to put the
writing to one side. But I know that I'll come back to it.”

Activists questioned by agents

WINNIPEG (CP) — Agents of the Canadian Security
and Intelligence Service acted irresponsibly when they
questioned ‘peace activists about their dealitigs with Soviet
visitors, a New Democratic Party MP said.

Svend Robinson, the party's security service critic, said
he plans to ask Solicitor General Perrin Beatty about reports
that a Winnipeg peace activist and two teachers’ union
officials were interviewed by agents.

“I view the matter as being very serious,” Robinson

Kaplan, who as solicitor general helped create the
civilian security agency in July 1984, said it is only natural
the agency is interested in Soviet visitors to Canada:

“One has to realize that they (Soviets) don't just allow
people to leave at random,” Kaplan said.
