Club took a profitable road trip
last weekend to a tournament at
the Valley View Golf Course in
Winlaw.

A Gastlegar team picked up,

first place and two others tied for,
second at the nine-hole tourney
which attracted 39 players from
Nelson, Castlegar and Winlaw to
the picturesque course.

Winning first prize was the
team of Andy Popoff, Ruth Duf-
fy, -Mike Kurnoff, George
Crossley and Zeke Clements.

MONTREAL (CP) — The Mon-
treal Machine of the fledgling World
League of American Football has
sacked the playing of national an-
thems after O Canada was resoun-
dingly booed at the team’s home
opener.

Before the April 1 game against
the Barcelona Dragons, trumpeter
Maynard Ferguson and his band’s
version of O Canada competed with
a jeering crowd. There was no
booing when they played the Spanish
anthem.

The Machine made the decision
last week, but didn’t announce it
before the home game last Monday
against the Birmingham Fire.

Machine president Ri Dore
said the team isn’t making a political

tatement.
If anything, he added, the team is
cancelling the anthems ‘‘out of

respect.
