Carpenters on Swedish swap enjoying Canada @ Celgar expansion workers part of exchange program set up by United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America Thomas Bink NEWS REPORTER The scenery may have changed, but the rules are still the same. For two visiting Swedish carpenters, ing in Castlegar means just working with mountains around them, not changing their brand of carpentry. “It’s not much different,” said Richard part of an ext program United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Join- ers of America. Both Mattsson and fellow Swede Haaken Nyman, both fourth-year apprentices, are in Castlegar for two weeks working on the $700 million Celgar expansion and learning about Canadian culture before heading home. They were in Vancouver for 10 weeks before transferring to the Celgar site last weekend. Nyman said working conditions in Sweden are better than those in Canada. “We have microwaves and showers right. on the plant site,” Nyman said. He added * that a full metric measuring system, not a partial one like on most Canadian construc- tion sites, is much easier. But they agreed there is more attention placed on safety in Canada than in Sweden. “They talk a lot more about safety,” Ny- man said. But the two felt more attention to safety is needed. Expansion work is being + conducted while the plant is running, which causes some unusual, dangerous situations. “It’s very dangerous,” Mattsson said. Mattsson was working on the same crew as the employee who was gassed and sent to hospital Wednesday. “It was scary.” But on the positive side, Nyman and Mattsson said they have enjoyed learning more about Canada. “Before, I thought Canada would be more like America,” Nyman said. “But it is more like Europe.” Nyman said he plans to go hiking this weekend, something he could not do much in Sweden. “It’s such a beautiful country.” The two were selected from about 200 ap- plicants for the exchange, and are hoping to travel to other countries like India or Ger- many on similar work ex: 3 “They're both excellent apprentices,” said Len Embree, business representative for the Carpenters and Joiners Union locals 2300 and 2458. “We'll miss them when they leave.” Two local carpenters visited Sweden earli- er this year, Embree said. He said two of the last five work exchanges have involved B.C. carpenters, although competitions are open to all carpenters across North America. “We have probably the best- trained car- penters in the world in B.C.,” Embree said. But would either Mattsson or Nyman come back to work in Canada? “Sure, if I can bring my girlfriend,” Matts- son said, smiling. continued from front page proached people this early — we've tried to be very upfront thing to the last minute,” Bar- cham said.
