There are three weekly : news- papers and two dailies. All other branches of -business are well represented, [he popula- . tion is variously estimated . from 6000 to 7500. Board and lodging at the ho- tels, $2 to $3 per day.. Meals 25 to 50 cents. Furnished rooms, $2.50 to $7 per week. Itis useless to write. and ask it any particular business would pay here. Everybody must be his own judye and take his own chances, While there {s not work tor all who iaquire, most sober, indus- tiious persons who really wish to work have sofar been able to obtain it. ‘We would not advise any man to land here ‘‘broke” without friends, although many who have done go are doing well, This camp is now settling down on a business basis. The populace not only in 4 mines and conducting the busi- ness of the town, but are-buying, or bonding and developing min- ing property; buying and selling real estate; building houses for rental purposes, prospecting and staking prospectors. Many are heresimply looking on in won- derment. We believe it will go on and on until Rossland can boast of a population of 50,000. After that it will probably settle down to 8 proposition of a pay roll but not for a few years. There are plenty of money here from all sections of the globe; but the p' 1 ii are from the United States, with Canada largely interested. ‘The history of the camp reads like a fairy tale, and the fabulous riches are ecarcely excelled by the imaginary “King Solomon's Mines,” We will not attempt to discuss the mines in a single ar- ticle, as we have been writing about them for nearly three years and have not been able to keep up with them. The ore ship- ments speak for themselves. ‘The towa has won ‘an ‘enviable reputation for law and order, It is supplied with waterworks and - electric lights. ‘Lhe main street is guaded and ten blocks are built up with two and three-atory busi- nesshouges.
