A guide to business services in the beautiful Slocan Valley Our Vall ey: “SUN STAFF If you drink and drive this sea- son you will be caught. That's the message the Castlegar RCMP are sending out in conjunction with the Christmas CounterAttack Campaign which started Dec. 8 “Enjoy yourself. Have a festive season. If you're going to drink have someone else drive. It's not worth it,” cautioned Cpl. Al Hudema of the Castlegar RCMP. In a press release, Jackie Pement, Minister of Transporta- tion and Highways also cautioned would-be drinking drivers and requested the public's assistance during the campaign “Motorists can assist police by cooperating at roadchecks. A few SUN STAFF PHOTO /Karen Kerkhott moments of your time will help make the roads safer for everyone.” Pement also urged the public to contact RCMP should they encounter a drinking driver. A description of the vehicle, its location and direction of travel, said Pement, greatly assists police in finding the driver. In 1993, drinking and driv- ing was the leading cause of death on B.C. highways. The human toll was 160 deaths and 5,440 injured It is estimated that 400,000 vehicles will be stopped during the campaign which will run until Jan. 3 First offense for impaired driv- ing include a one-year prohibi- tion from driving and a minimum $300 fine ‘€ oF A Selkirk ( College Foundation Se g would like to thank all corporate sponsors, contributors, committed volunteers, those who attended the Sth Annual Festival of Trees on Friday, December 2nd arid all those who supported the Foundation by purchasing lottery tickets. While on his run he found, and ate, a deadly poison—antifreeze. “They love antifreeze—it’s like candy to them,” explained Hillstead. When Katchoo returned from his morning run, Hillstead said the dog appeared to be fine. But as the day wore on Katchoo became progressively ill. At first he was only vomiting, but by nightfall he was unsteady on his feet and obviously sick. RENKERKHOFF un Staff Area I and the Lower Arrow Columbia will soon have a new and up-to-date official communi- ty plan. David Wahn, land use planner “for the Regional District of Cen- tral Kootenay, said the current plan, known as the Castlegar Fringe Official Community Plan will now be called the Kootenay- Columbia Rivers Official Com- munity Plan. Last adopted in 1983, the plan has become outdated and recent legislation requires that OCPs be reviewed every five years. The new OCP, which is cur- rently still in draft form, came A urine had “ingested antifreeze. But, unfortunately for Katchoo, it was too late. Wahn said due to different ies’ restrictive gui there may some residents who claim he hasn't listened to their concems, but he concluded that's just not true. “There will be a number of thoughts and concerns where they feel I'm not listening. It’s a matter of how much lateral is given by the ministries.” One of the items which is sure to be an issue will be the removal of land from Agricul- tural Land Reserve. But Wahn said a “good portion” of ALR will be preserved. Hillstead is hoping that her story will help prevent another needless death of a much-loved “Everybody just loved Katchoo.” |Community plan in works for outlying areas there are many issues which need to be resolved, such as the provision of adequate services like water, schools and sewer. He is hoping that the OCP will do just that “The purpose is to make sure development happens in as effi- cient manner as possible.” Wahn said he is in the process of drafting a rough plan which he will be presenting to the public sometime in January. John Meade met recently with the Local Commission for New Denver, Silverton, Slocan and the Slocan Valley to discuss the Proposal.
