Jackaline Allan, of Blueberry Creek has been hired, as operations manager after a six- week search and selection process carried out by a special committee of the Games Board. Ken Smyth, president of the Games, wel- comes Allan and said the board “feels fortu- nate” to have hired someone of Allan’s calibre. “Her breadth of experience, particularly her ds we will be facing over the next eight months,” said Smyth. Allan said her first priority will be to get an office up and running, but declined to say where that office will be saying to do so would be premature. But Allan said she’s looking forward to working with volunteers of the region. “It will be a lot of fun. I have a huge amount of respect for the volunteers. In Van- couver I wasn’t used to that kind of support.” Before moving to Blueberry Creek, Allan was employed as facility manager at Nat Bai- ley Stadium, in Vancouver. Over the past two year she has been employed as office manager at Natures-Own Contracting, which provides operations ser- vices to BC provincial parks, including Cham- pion Lakes. Drink responsibly and drive carefully this holiday season Celgar investigates soap spill KAREN KERKHOFF _ Sun Staff Celgar officials are investigat- ing the cause behind a “soap” spill into the Columbia River last Thursday evening. Jim McLaren, Celgar’s techni- cal services manager said the spill occurred after “liquor”, a byproduct of pulp, was poured into a storage container. The liquor, explained McLaren, settles in the container resulting in “soap” rising to the top. Because the vat had been overfilled, the soap poured out onto the ground and was trans- ported by storm sewer into the Columbia River. McLaren said the majority of the soap, which he describes as being thick as molasses, spilled onto the ground, with little end- ing up in the Columbia. “We corralled the soap on land with a dike of bark. The bulk of it is on the land,” he floating mass, which was con- tained within log booms close to shore. The mass was about the size of “two or three offices.” McLaren assured the soap is naturally occurring, but hastened to say while it is organic, one wouldn't want to “dump it willy nilly.” Attempts on Friday to clean up the spill with the help of a barge and a clam shell type crane were ful. But McLaren said The portion that song up in the river resulted in a foamy the land and water spill were ‘suc- cessfully cleaned up Saturday, lSnoring orders jails man KAREN KERKHOFF Sun Staff arbitrarily ignored by Clark.
