THE MINER VS, C. P. BR Itisno partof the business of the Recorp to fight the battles of the C. Pr. R., or any other corporation, not even Mr. Heinze’s, but we are constrained to say that the never ceasing harangue of the morning paper against the C. P. R. isb it ing and tat Some things the Miner says against the C. P. R. may be true, but they: are’ true of all railroad companies, and gen- erally more objectionably so than with that corporation. * * While Mr. Whyte, the general mana- ger of the western division of the 0. P. R., was in the city recently he explain- ed tothe Miner that the “old rails’ on the Crow’s Nest division were really of a better quality than the rails turned out nowadays, and that they were taken off of the mountain divisions of the main . Hine and replaced with heavier rails be- cause very heavy engines: had been put, on those mountain divisions. The Min- er published this statement, but goes on railing about the old raila, without giv- ing apy evidence. that they are not all right, wa * Ifthe Miner could point out wherein the C. P. R. was worse than any other corporation, or wherein its constant abuse could result in any good to this community, the people would have some .patiencein reading . its long daily edito- -rials; but: .as it does neither they sare Biege, Dress Goods. AUNTE that the waterworks company would be able to unduly influence the ratepayers into voting to buy ita plant will be re- sented by every: honorable. citizen of Rossland., The people should surely be trusted to make a proper disposition of their own moncy without being ‘accused heartily tired of its endless id = * * * ‘The bias and unreasonable malice of ‘the Miner toward the C. P. R. is glow- ingly manifest in its discussion of the transportation and treatment rate on the oresfrom-'the Rossland mines to the railamelter. While Mr. Heinze, the Teputed owner of the Miner, owned the ‘Trail amelter.and railroad between the mines and:the smelter, he charged $11 a ton for freight and creatment and forced the owners of the Le Roi’ mine to build @ smelter, at Northport, because he would not give them a satisfactory rate, or sell them a smelter site along hie line. When the C.P,R, bought the smelter and railroad it gave a rate of $7 for transportation and treatment: and Jater reduced it to $6. Now the Ross- Iand Miner criticises tne ©. P.R. for trying to monopolize the melting and transportation businces, and insists that the ore should be hauled and treated for 96 a ton or less. * The Rrecorp must not be regarded az in the Sight, for it is not, but it, like all d, is d with the conti ous unreagonable attacks upon a corpor- ation-which ia no better or.ne woree than other corporations, with probably the exception of the Heinze combine, which got-s round figure for ite holdingsin this aection from the C. P. R. The land Water & Ligh ebjects to being bulidozed into selling its plant to the city at itsown price, and the city council objects to being bull- doxed into paying the company’s price. The best way to settle it is to submit the proposition of buying and the proposi- tion of putting in a syatem to the people. Their money is to be used, and they can Ri) best judge of. what they want, and| ,, should not be bulldozed into either pro- position ‘by the city council. of being ibl —____ In di a P ai against three Montreal newspaper men for commenting upon a case while it was upon trial, Judge Wurtle said’ itwas improper that any comments should ap- pear during the hearing of the case, Lut when it’ was finished the newspapers may make any comment they saw fit about the judge, jurors or witnesses, s0 long agit was not done through hatred or ill-will, but in the public interest. In fact, he considered proper comments should be made as.it was a great pro- tection and obliged the officials to keep within the law by reminding them they may becalled to account, This is a commendable and more liberal view than is taken by the judges of this _pro- vince, who seem to regard the dignity of the court above everything else. —_—_——— C.
