Conroy is familiar with the problems of Area I, having lived in Pass Creek for the past 12 years and in Glade for three years. Having four children, two presently in the school system and two com- ing on-stream, gives Conroy a long-term concern for the children of School District No. 9. He has had extensive small-business management and labor relations experi- ence, which he feels could be beneficial in creating future harmony. The issues affecting Area I are the potential for school closures, the busing of kin- dergarten and primary. stu- dents, and the removal of second-language courses from elementary schools. EILEEN KOOZNETSOFF School board candidate . for Areal From the time my children were in kindergarten, I was keenly interested in the choice of academic subjects available that enhance the intellectual growth of all children as well as the extra- curricular activities that de- velop normal social and life skills. For five seasons, at the request of concerned par- ents, I instructed a second language evening course to children ranging in ages five to 13. At the same time, I enrolled in Selkirk. College and received a certificate from.-the Social Service Worker Program, a program which gave me the oppor- tunity to expand my inter- ests of working with children and youth with special needs. I have also been active ina number of community groups. I was a leader of a youth group and also served as secretary on a local ladies club. It is the concerns of the residents of Area I that Con- roy hopes to represent on the school board, a board he feels must become more open to community input. In these days of budget cuts, it is more important than ever that School Dis- trict No. 9 have a dynamic, progressive school . board. Our children are our most important resources, _ KOOZNETSOFF: Quality education My concerns about quality education for our children in the rural area during the re- straint period prompted me to run as a candidate for election to the- Board of School Trustees of School District No. 9. I am a mother of two teenagers, an 18-year-old daughter who graduated last year and a son who is pres- ently enrolled in Grade 11 at SHSS. Pr ly, I am as a receptionist at Western Bestsellers Inc., job-sharing with another employee. My views on some local issues are: 1) That our children re- ceive quality education so that they become positive, responsible young adults able to make rational decisions in this changing world. During these times of restraint, many schools are undergoing changes. Locally, the second language courses have been suspended. I feel that there is a defin- ite need to have French, our country’s official second lan- guage and Russian, the heri- tage language of many chil- dren in the local area brought back into the classrooms of our elementary schools. Also, immersion learning, Russian or French, a concept fairly new in. our district offers children the know- ledge of a second language at no cost to any other aspect of their education. 2) That each child have safe transportation to the school in each respective MINI HOLIDAY - To allow you io leisurely explore the world of Vacation Villa Interval ownership and the many benefits. In my opinion,:a rural school offers security. to a youngster be- cause of the familiar land- mark in the community. It colors all other issues, from threat- ened. school closures and busing concerns, to staff and service reductions. Are the needs of our children really being met?
