For the 1988-89 fiscal year, the Senate wants 33.76 million to keep itself running, an increase of $3 million or 9.7 per cent over this year's budget. And about $1.3 million of that increase is for hiring researchers, bringing the total research budget to $1.6 million, Siroun Aghajanian, the Senate finance director, said in an interview this week. For the current fiscal year, which ends March 31, senators had access to only $300,000 for researchers. “The senators are a lot more active now, they're a lot younger and they're doing a lot more work, committee work,” Aghajanian said, “If the House of Commons gives them a bill to study, well, they have to study it.” Since 1984, the Commons has passed about 180 bills, Each must be studied and approved by the Senate before it can become law, The research funding in crease allows for a maximum $40,000 a year for each mem- ber, said Senator Tom Lef- ebvre, acting chairman of the Senate budget subcom- mittee. Forestry Minister LeRoy Fjordbotten confirmed Monday night the huge forestry tract overlaps the portion of northern Alberta bush that the Lubicon band claims it's entitled to. “The Lubicon land claim is in that general area,” Fjordbotten said. The forestry minister and Premier Don Getty announced Monday that Daishowa Canada Co. Ltd. of Fuji City, Japan, will build a $500-million pulp mill in the Peace River area of northwestern Alberta. The plant's aspen poplar feedstock will come from a huge tract of land east of the Peace River that completely FRESH START By CasNews Staff The West Kootenay National Exhibition Centre has a fresh coat of paint which treasurer Jacque Hamilton is hoping is symbolic of a fresh start for the financially-troub- led centre. The NEC recently completed renovations to the interior with a local Job Trac program sponsored by the Castlegar Chamber of Commerce. Burlap wall coverings were removed, 13 years worth of nail holes were filled and a fresh coat of paint was applied last week. . Hamilton says the NEC is hoping to receive more than $30,000 from the provincial government's deficit reduction program. The program stipulates matching funds of $1 for every $2 from the grant be contributed from local government in the Trail, Nelson, and Castlegar areas. Hamilton says there is a good chance the centre will receive the grant. “What that will do is reduce our state of debt and put us back in the black,” she says. The centre fell on financial hard times and was con- sidering a temporary or permanent closure last November. As part of a “Save the Centre Campaign,” set for March, the NEC is staging a membership drive. A fundraiser is planned for March 15 with a “Back on Track, Out of the Red and Into the Black Dinner” at the Castlegar C ity Complex, entertaii and a silent auction. The silent auction will feature works donated by local artists such as, John Hodges, Nancy Knight, Barbara Hunter, Peippi Bos, and Sandra Donohue. The NEC is currently featuring an exhibit from’ the Harvard University Semitic Museum called the Holy Land Then and Now. In The Holy Land Then and Now, 49 sites photographed by such 19th century photographers as Francis Frith, the Maison Bonfils, Zangaki Freres and James McDonald appear alongside “new” images of the same sites, rephotographed in the 1980s by photographer Daniel Tassel. The 19th century photographs were made at a time when archaeologists and biblical scholars were eager to authenticate the location of historical sites; wealthy ad- venturers sought to capture the unusual; and entre- preneurial photographers came to produce souvenir prints for tourists and for “armchair travelers” in the West. The photographers represented in the exhibit include: e Zangaki Freres — Possibly Turkish; worked out of a studio in Port Said. Active between the 1870s and 1890s in Egypt, Greece and Palestine. e James McDonald — Seargeant in the British Royal Engineers. Fourth-quarter earnings increased 2'/2 times to $62.9 million or 55 cents a share from $23.3 million or 16 cents a share in 1986. Market demand for pulp and paper products contin. ued strong in the fourth quarter, the company said, enabling it to rea¢h the record sales and earnings for the year. Income in 1986 was ‘cut about $50 million because of the industry-wide strike by members of the International Woodworkers of America during the fourth quarter, the company noted. Investors _ Syndicate Limited NOW LOCATED IN THE OLD SHELL BUILDING 1761 Columbia Ave., Castlegar Chief Bernard Ominayak said his band will fight any attempts to cut trees on land the Indians siew as their own. But he didn't specify what measures, the Lubicons are prepared to take. Fifteen per cent of the pulp mill's pricé tag will be picked up by grants from the provincial and federal governments. Fjordbotten insisted there is no conflict with the Lubicons' land claim because more forest land can be set aside for Daishowa if the disputed Libicon reserve is expanded. “We couldn't do a deal unless we agreed to that,” he said. “They (the Lubicons) are claiming 10 per cent of the province. Holding up the creation of 2,000 jobs (630 direct and over 1,260 indirect) because they are claiming 10 per cent of the province is not reasonable.” The minister added that neither the government nor the company had approached the band about the deal with Daishowa. (CP) — Revenue Canada doesn't believe the two-year-old girl who wakes Dennis Pilon up at 4 a.m. every day, actually exists. So federal taxation authorities are withholding $600 of a $1,028 rebate Pilon believes he is entitled to on his 1986 tax return. Pilon's wife Erika gave birth to his little tax deduction Joellean Alicia on Dec. 27, 1985, at Burnaby General Hospital. He listed Joellean as a dependent when he filed his 1985 tax return and got a $900 rebate. The trouble has spread to Pilon's son Matthew who was born last February. Pilon said Tuesday the family didn't get the $325 advance in December for the child tax credit. But he said Revenue Canada insists they did and is withholding the extra money from Pilon's tax rebate. The federal Health Department knows the chiltiren exist, he said, and has been sending family allowance cheques right from the start. “They've got it right,” Pilon said. “A single phone call would straighten out Revenue Canada. But they won't do it. “They tell me it has to go through the proper procedure which means 11 weeks before I get my money.” Green Giant VEGETABLE Selected Varieties * Min. 341 ml Tin . 18° Snow Star ICE CREAM Assorted Flavors 4 Litre Pail 3.48 Ovenjoy ¢ Slice SPRITE Regular or Diet or Coke Classic 1 Litre Bottle ¢ Plus Deposit 51.08 Hey Kids!!
