He was in the USSR, how- ever, and it was not until 1960 that it was established through the Red Cross and Red Crescent that he had in fact died in a labor camp in 1942. In the meantime, the grand- son of the elder Peter P. Verigin, John J. Verigin, served as an with John J. When the USCC was first formed in 1938, there were over 30 member communities throughout southern B.C. and Alberta. Over the years, with changing population patterns, the membership has been reor- ganized into 18 communities, in- cluding an “Open List” which covers outlying areas such as Vancouver, the Okanagan and Alberta. Each community is represented by two elected trustees, who are empowered to make all-important decisions at the annual convention, including the election of the executive committee. It continues to operate a playschool as well as Russian schools. It has regular Sunday meetings in the Brilliant Cultural Centre and an active ladies’ organization. As well, in 1987 the USCC Union of Youth celebrated its 40th anniversary with a special three-day festival at the Brilliant Cultural Centre. In 1982 the USCC helped sponsor the International Douk- hobor Intergroup Symposium which saw Doukhobors, Molo- kans, Mennonites and Quakers from across North America and around the world gather in Brilliant for three days. The symposium featured prominent speakers, among them Ilya Tolstoy, a professor at Editor's note: For much of the material in this sup- plement the Castlegar News used excerpts and information from Plakun Trava, an illustrated his- tory of the Doukhobors by Koosma J. Tarasoff, pub- lished in 1982 by Mir Pub- lications. Moscow State University and great grandson of Leo Tolstoy, who was instrumental in helping the Doukhobors leave Russia for Canada at the turn of the century. Three years later, in 1985, anothér international symposi- um was staged at the Centre, this time the World Youth — Peace Through Communications symposium. Held Aug. 27-31, 1985, it attracted youths from 15 countries. Its feature speaker was Geof- frey Pearson, former Canadian ambassador to the USSR. Also speaking were Sergey Plekha- nov, head of social and political studies at the Canada-U.S. In- stitute in Moscow, and Jim Stark, then-head of Operation Dismantle. The symposium's goal was to stimulate global understanding of, the threat of nuclear war. And last year the USCC spon- sored a Russian-Canadian Heri- tage Festival at the Brilliant Cultural Centre, which featured guest speaker Ilya Tolstoy, and the unveiling of a specially- commissioned statue of Leo Tolstoy.
