INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) —
Bill Shoemaker, who has over-
come adversity since the day he
was born, faces another battle.

The winningest jockey in horse
racing history was partially,
paralysed in a car accident, his
wife Cindy said in a statement
Tuesday.

Shoemaker ‘‘suffered severe in-
juries, the most critical of which
is paralysis of his extremities
associated with a fracture and
dislocation of his neck.

The jockey-turned-trainer was
injured Monday night when the
vehicle he was driving overturned
near suburban San Dimas.

Authorities said he was under
the influence of alcohol and the
California Highway Patrol issued
a warrant for his arrest.

Shoemaker, 59, underwent
surgery after the crash.

The. four-foot-11 Shoemaker
weighed 98 pounds while he was
riding. When he born in 1931, he
was given little chance of survival
because he was so tiny.

“Right from the start people
said he wasn’t going to make it,””
said Dan Smith, who co-authored
Shoemaker’s 1975 autobiography
The Shoe. ‘‘He’s been fighting
that all his life.

BRUINS VS. WHALERS

Boston again stormed the net in the third period,
but this time the Whalers weathered the attack as they
beat the Bruins 4-3 to even their Adams Division
semifinal series 2-2. Game 5 of the best-of-seven series is
Thursday night in Boston.

“We certainly talked about last year’s game,”
Bruins defenceman Glen Wesley said. ‘‘We thought they
might be thinking about it.

“‘We certainly got our chances, but it just didn’t
happen.”

CANADIENS VS. SABRES

The Montreal Canadiens had verything going for
them.

They beat the Buffalo Sabres in the first two games
of their Adams Division NHL semifinal and they did it
despite sub-par performances from goalie Patrick. Roy.

And they were coming to Buffalo, where the home
team had played so poorly during the regular season and
in recent playoff appearances that many of their fans
had deserted them, to be replaced by Montreal fans
from across the border in Ontario.

But a funny thing happened on the way back to the
Forum. The Sabres walked away with two victories and
a realistic chance to win their first playoff series since
1983.

“I don’t want the people who don’t come to the
games anymore to think that we're not getting out there
and not trying to win,”’ said Benoit Hogue, one of Buf-
falo’s best players in a 6-4 victory Tuesday night in
Game 4. ‘We're doing the best that we can.

“*Nobody likes to lose. We want to win as bad as

any team in the league.’

More than a few NHL observers questioned that
when the series started and more than a few more agreed
when the Canadiens won Games | and 2.

In Game 1, Montreal outworked Buffalo. In Game
2, more Sabres showed up, but, said Buffalo coach Rick
Dudley, certain, unnamed high-profile Sabres still were
AWOL.

RANGERS VS. CAPITALS

Now it’s the New York Rangers who must regroup
from a disappointing loss.

The Rangers had a chance to take a 3-1 lead in their
Patrick Division NHL semifinal series against
Washington, but instead they let the Capitals pull even
by dropping a 3-2 decision Tuesday night.

Game 5 of the best-of-seven series is Thursday night
in New York.

The Rangers still own the home-ice advantage in
what is now a best-of-three series, but Washington left
winger Dino Ciccarelli likes the Capitals chances.

“We're real confident,"’ Ciccarelli said. ‘SYou get
into the playoffs and the momentum swings.

“They were riding the wave before the game —
they’re up 2-1 and the pressure’s all on us — and now
the pressure’s on them, big time, to win in New York.
They certainly don’t want to come back here down three
games to two.””

Not that home ice has been all that important. Each
team has already won a road game.

“I don’t know that being at home is going to make
much difference,’ New York coach Roger Neilson said.
“I think every game will be a hard one.

“‘We were expecting a long series, and that looks
like what it’s going to be.””

DEVILS VS. PENGUINS

The New Jersey Devils playoff series with the Pit-
tsburgh Penguins is now Chris Terreri’s series to win or
lose.

Terreri put to rest any speculation that he might be
replaced in goal by Sean Burke by turning in a spec-
tacular 15-save third-period performance to lead the
Devils to a 4-1 victory over the Penguins on Tuesday
night, evening the best-of-seven Patrick Division NHL
semifinal 2-2.

Until the final 20 minutes, Terreri, who has played
goal in all four games, was having a cakewalk against
the Penguins, enjoying a 2-0 lead. He faced only 13
rather easy shots in the opening two periods.

All that changed in the final period, when Pit-
tsburgh closed the gap to 2-1 on a power-play goal by
Mario Lemieux and then fired shot after shot in an at-
tempt to tie the game with Viacheslav Fetisov serving a
major penalty.

Terreri had to come up with big saves on Ron Fran-
cis, Scott Young, Mark Recchi and Jaromir Jagr in the
next 12 minutes before John MacLean finally gave him
some breathing room with his third goal of the series,
with 3:18 to play. Claude Lemieux added his second
goal of the game with 1:17 remaining.

“‘He made some key saves at the right time, no
question,”’ Devils’ defenceman Ken Daneyko said.
“‘He’s definitely played solid every game’

The Castlegar and District
Hospital Auxiliary was treated to a
tour of the new long-term care unit
on Feb. 18,

they were impressed with the
Progress of the new facility. The tour
was the second for the auxiliary since
the construction began last fall.

On March 18, the auxiliary held its
regular monthly meeting in the
hospital board room. New members
welcomed were Anita Tomlin, Con-
nie Bullanoff, Michelle Hyde and
Susan Fedunec.

The auxiliary members met the
new long-term care director, Linda
Moorlag, who spoke to the members
on her experiences with nursing,
especially dealing with the long-term
residents. She also briefed the
auxiliary on how other auxiliaries
functioned. The. auxiliary members
look forward to volunteering their
services in the new unit.

The B.C. Association of Hospital
Auxiliaries conference will be held in
Vancouver in May. Pat Popoff and
Anne Nazaroff will be attending the
conference.

Anne Benedict and Polly Dube
donated lap covers to be used in the
new long-term unit by the residents.
Hazel Chernoff and Dube also
donated baby articles and crafts.

The auxiliary’s sale will be held in
Kinnaird Hall, April 19 from 3 p.m.
to 8 p.m. and April 20 from 10 a.m.
to 2 p.m. Please note the time
change on late Friday afternoon.

The next meeting will be held
April 15 at 7:30 p.m. in the hospital
board room. New members are
always welcome.

An auxiliary has been formed to
help and plan entertainment for
residents of the new Castleview
Care Centre, plus take turns working
in the Tuck Shop.

The newly elected officers are:

chairman — Elaine Whitehead;
secretary — Nellie McCreight;
treasurer — Mabel Bonderoff; public
relations — Helen Leduc; phoning
committee — Liz Devries and Stella
Baglo.

Meetings will be held on the fourth
Wednesday of each month at 1:30
p.m. in Castleview Care Centre.

The auxiliary is open to anyone
who would like to give some of his
or her free time helping to give the
elderly in the centre a more interes-

retreat

The annual spring retreat of the
Kootenay-area Women’s Aglow
Fellowships will be held May 3, 4
and 5 at Kimberley.

Matilda Kipfer of Glendale, Ariz.,
will be the special guest speaker.
Teena Gowdy, best known for her
travels with the Agape Force, an in-
terdenominational youth-oriented
ministry, will -hold special sessions
directed at teens. Gowdy has recor-
ded with Candle Co. Music and has
travelled across the United States,
New Zealand and parts of
Canada. All women and teenaged
girls are invited to attend the retreat.

If you are able to reduce this
number, whatever it is, you'll be
accomplishing a lot of good
things, You'll be putting less
bulk into the Ootischenia dump,
you'll be reducing the rate at
which our natural resources are
being mined, and you'll be
helping industry remanufacture
good usable cans by using less
energy and at the same time
reducing air and water pollution.

Aluminum pop and beer cans
are accepted at many retail
outlets and bottle depots for
refunds, as we all know. A few
other beverages are sold in

the tin cans, rinse them to
remove the food residues, then

them in a cardboard box (or bag)
