happy Christmas Seasons into
tragedy..:. Christmas fires occur
‘ because’ - extra ‘hazards "are
brought into- homes, schools and
public buildings. A little know-
ledge of these hazards and how
to prevent tragic fires will keep

The. Christmas Tree

Remember your Christmas tree
is very combustible, being filled
with: pitch and’ resin, it ignites
easily and burns furiously.
Selection

Choose a small tree instead of
a large.one. It can be just as
pretty: and it is less hazardous:
Be sure to obtain a freshly cut
tree.
Setting-up 2

Do_ not, set up the tree until
the day before Christmas. Keep
it outdoors until ready ‘to in-
stall. Set up :thé tree ‘in ‘the
coolest part of the house, away
from radiators, heaters and fire-
places.::,Do not block. entrances
or passage-ways.

at an angle at least one inch
above the original cut. Stand the
tree in a pail of water filled
with coal or'sand.’ Be sure the
pail. is kept filled with water
to about one inch from the top.
This method, when used with a
freshly cut tree, reduces flam-
mability as effectively as any
fireproofing chemicals, retards
the drying out process of the
‘tree. ‘

When needles start
falling, take the tree down and
discard it outdoors. Take your
tree down as soon as possible
after Christmas, ©:

Lighting The Tree

Never use candles on or near
the Christmas tree. Use stand-
ard electric lighting sets bear-
ing the label of the Underwrit-
ers’ laboratories and/or Canadian
Standard Association. Inspect
every socket and wire to make
sure it is in good condition. Dis-
card sets with frayed wiring. A
colored spotlight focused on the
tree is very effective and safest
of all.

.. Be sure circuits are not over-
‘loaded for a fire may start in
the walls. If the circuit fuses
should blow, the cause no doubt
r be too many lights. .and,

inate some of the appliances and
replace the fuse with. a new one
of the proper rating.

Inspect the, tree from time to
time. If needles near lights
start to turn brown, change the
position of the lights. Be sure
that light. bulbs are not too
near combustibles. The lights,
get very hot and should have
guards. Provide a switch at

turning lights off and on. Make
certain that all lighting is turn-
ed off before retiring or leaving
the premises.

Decorations

erous. « Decorate ‘the tree lightly
and. use non-combustible’ ma-
terials such as metal, glass and
asbestos. Heavy decorations are
hazardous.

Purchase and: use flameprocf
materials—insist on them. Flame-
proofing. treatments'are available
for home use if combustible ma-
terials are used. Flame-proof-
ing of. plastics is not possible.
A good home flame-proofing so-
lution for fabrics and garments
is made-by mixing 9 ounces of
borax and 4 ounces of boric acid
in a gallon of water. Dip the
fabric into the solution, wring
by hand, then hang to dry. This
flame-proofing method must be
repeated after each laundering
‘of the garment.

Don’t buy celluloid dolls, or
toys. Toys requiring alcohol,
kerosene or gasoline to generate
