The Castlegar Sun Page 10B = Native Blood Wednesday, October 26, 1994 Continued from 6B For example, in the early part of the book, Smith is looking at photos that someone else took which shows the glory-times of these communities. To counter the noble Indian image, she creates her own photos of those she has had to deal with. Her photos are wordprints that are hard to look at as they depict the harsh reality of reserve life. Throughout the book images of winter and death dominate. After all, the book begins with a dead, frozen dog beside the road. However, despite all the horror —blood from one end of the nursing station to the other after a particularly bad stabbing inci- dent—th . ‘ cable 10 a eee o are when other images slide into place. In fact the book ends with the image of a pussy-willow signify- ing the coming of spring and the renewal of life. So there is some optimism in the book. Smith admitted that as she spent more time in the North, she came to know the good features of these communi- ties. She found a spirit in the elders and the children she didn't sense existed at first. Despite the bleakness of their life and their community, these “others” could smile—and for them life had purpose. The strongest aspect of the book is Smith's ability to draw characters. Perhaps the most tragic was one man who called himself Chief Crazy Horse. He was an alcoholic through and through who kept promising to reform. He terrorized the nurs- ing stations throughout the area. He threatened, he bluffed, he cajoled, and he whine. He spoke about his wound from having been in Viet Nam, but, as Smith discovered, he was a victim of a childhood shooting by a brother. In the end, he destroyed the faith even his Indian friends had in him and was finally isolated with- in his community. When asked how she thought her book would be received by people in the communities where she worked, Smith indicated that it would upset a lot of people. She felt the Indian leaders would not accept her portrait of their communities and their prob- lems. In addition, she acknowl- 6.30 pm (Wed.) 9:00 am (Thurs.) 12:00 pm (Sun.) While writing the book, she showed it to some of her col- leagues and to a few Indian friends who were reasonably lit- erate. The response was that the material was true and needed to be published. After the book was released in early October, Smith sent publici- ty notices to her employers and many of the stations where she has worked. She commented that “I'm not going to hide from these people. They will know I've writ- ten a book which looks closely at Outpost Nursing on Indian reserves.” Judy Smith will be reading from this book at Selkirk College on Tuesday, November | in Room M21. She is worth listen- ing to. Her book is worth reading. @ Reflections —___ Continued from 8B Sweating with fear I drew up into the narrow upper space. The eyes got large, the dark form darker and the snarl more menacing. “It's about to leap,” I can remember saying to myself and “the best defense is attack.” Then gathering the shreds of my courage I flung myself at it just as it sprang toward me. There was a flash of light, a tremendous electric shock and a sense of falling. Suddenly I was wide awake, in bed, shak- ing violently but triumphant. Darkness and shadows became more friendly thereafter and that particular nightmare never returned. Was this the courage of Saint Withold or sheer desperation? I'll never know. In any case the old Shakespearean curse against ‘things that go bump in the night’ is handy to have come Hallow’een. BUILT-IN VACUUM SYSTEMS * 140° water lit + 10-year motor warranty *599cr-. Murray Garvin 1-226-7540 ¢ 365-2438 FAMILIES GROW WITH FAITH Submitted by: Pastor John Wiuff, Kinnaird Church of God A phone call, late one night, sent me out on a Pastoral call to a home where a marriage was dying. I talked with the wife who was antici ing her husbands walking out in the moming. As I listened to the familiar story of misunderstandings, neglect, and hurtful words said in the heat of arguments, I wondered what was going wrong in our society. As a Pastor, the break down of the family is a common crises in which I called to intercede. I have also seen families healed and transformed by contact with a Christian church and the love of Christ. The Canada Committee for the Intemational Year of the Family, sponsored a study conducted by the Angus Reid Group, on the state of the family in Canada. The results showed that a majority of Canadians (63%) felt that Canada's families are in crisis. Most Canadian families also indicated that they preferred a traditional family structure, but due to the pressures of our world find this impossible. The family structure is changing in Canada and with that change crises is perceived. One of the surprising results of the study was that those families that attend church regularly are more likely to be married once, less likely to have ever been divorced and less likely to be living common-law. This does not meat the church is a place where everyone has their life together! We all struggle with the challenges life sends us. The difference is that we all need the I love and support of others to help us reach for the ideal most of us share. We call this Calvary Baptist Church 10:50 am Morn. Worship 6:30 pn Ev. Not only can you find friendship, acceptance, and forgiveness in the Church but you can also find a spiritual support and power that goes beyond our human potential. Those persons responsible for family leadership know that the world is much larger than they can control. This is the reason we need a spiritual dimension to the home, or in other words, a faith in God who created all things. Work, finances, shelter, and food are important matters for our survival. But faith, hope, and love is what we survive for, and aspire too each day of our lives. These are parts of the spirit and a relationship with God. If we turn our attention to these matters, we will discover what many have found, God reaching out to us through Jesus Christ. We spend a great deal of time on matters that provide a place for a family and not enough time on the things of the spirit that makes a family. Your family may be happy in the things you own and do, but you may want more in your relationship with each other, more love, more faith, and more hope. The resurrected Lord and Savior Jesus Christ can bring this to your home and your life. Seek Him and you will find Him. Find Him, and you will be found.
