THE YACHT RACE, The first of the series of races be- ‘tween the Shamrock and Columbia, for the America cup, was called off to- day because‘ the yachts were becalm- ved, It was the closest kind of a race, and for a while looked as if the Shamrock had the best of it. Theeyes of the world today were on the con- test which took place off Sandy Hook between the speediest yachts ‘ever built. It was a national event in which the keenest interest cen- ‘tered, not only for the honor of win- ning the cup which American yachts have held through successive races in the past 48 years, but be- cause no end of wealth was spared in securing the knowledge which practical mechanical and’ scientific skill could introduce in the design and construction of the speediest yachts afloat. No little detail was overlooked. The interesting feature is that both yachts are of the same design, though built in different countries. some of the problem would be arrived at, as the present dor- mant condition of many of the mines was greatly prejudicial to the progress of that part of the Koote- nay country. He emphatically stated that his syndicate had not purchased the Sunset, a copper property in the Similkameen, and said: “Our people determined to offer nothing to the public unless pros- pects were developed tu such an extent as to prove beyond question that the whole silver-lead district had already established'an enviable At the present time many of the mines were closed or 00) partly closed consequent upon the proprietors: objecting to pay for 8 hours wages hitherto paid for 10 BUSINESS LOCALS. J. Collins of London, who un- venture. There is some good ore on several of the properties, but Mr. Collis' opinion is that no work has been done sufficient ta prove that ore could be found at any great depth, and as the same has occur- red in Alberni, Kamloops and at other points, our people decided not to offer it to the public if dividends were expected. The controllers of the Sunset are, I think, R. E. Brown, Doctor Averill, ex-Attorney General Joseph Martin and Smith Curtis. At all events, we have now no connection with the properties i and whoever offers ‘No ge is i to either, and the owners have been most cautious in hiding from the public tee qualitiés and advantages of each. They in this way have promoted the most genuine interest, and spec- ’ them to the public must accept all responsibility.” Application for Liquor License.
