Arrivefrom | DESTINATION, | Leave for McInnes and his tavorite Martin, for in allusion to the probability of a coalition between the opposition parties it says: ea a **But they forget that there is the Vieutenant-governor to reckon with. andhe is scarcely likely to !ook with favor upon-any crazy-quilt admi tration got up for the occasion.” So the World still hopes to see the governor go into active politics, regardless of the disastrous failure he has made of it hitherto, and of the rebuke the people have ad. than Mr. McInnes himself.—Nelson Miner. The people’ Si condemnation of Premier Martin ‘and hiscolleagues is, under “the circumstances, an equal di ion of the Ji ant-governor; a “fact “of “which a higher authority even than himself, will be. bound _.to__take_ sufficient notice to prevent any turther misuse of gubernatorial authority at Vic- toria. —News-Advertiser. : tered to him. In its love for Mar- tin, it forgets all about the principles of responsible government which have been violated by the governor, and evinces a hope that he will again offend in that particular. But, amid the wreck of Mr. Mar- tin’s hopes, the World finds com- fort in the fact that the same cyclone extinguished Mr. Cotton and the provincial party. It positively gloats over the defeat of Messrs Cotton, Forster and Deane, and then de- livers itself of this philippic on the talents embodied in the remnant of. the Martin party: “Mr. Martin and his supporters | Trail, Nelson.Crows 1:05 a.m. | Nest. daily, includ- | dng Sunday.ssees. HOW THE WORLD TOOK IT. ee The Vancouver World has all kinds of things to say about Mar- tin’s defeat, not only to explain it but to find consolation for him and itself. In one article on Monday it said: : “Never before was assailed as bitterly and with such vindictiveness as was Mr. Joseph Martin. The whole prov- ince, as an eastern contempor- ary states it, was literally manured with money to lish the over- a premier prise the best talent in the new g e. There is nothing on the other side to compare with Messrs. Martin, Brown, Smith Curtis, Mc- Innes, Oliver, Munro and Gilmour. There is an ideal cabinet right there. But seemingly there is to be no such good luck for poor British Columbia.” The editorial page of the World on that day betrays all kinds of cogitations passing through its cranium and a variety of sentiments agitating its tender heart. EDITORIAL NOTES, Mr. Martin has a weary time ahead for his former friend, Pre- mier Dunsmuir, for the Vancouver World says: ‘We have only com- miseration for the gentleman who finds himself occupying the premier- ship with Joseph Martin as leader of the opposition, for Mr. Martin is one whose tireless energy and won- derful resourcefulness makes him an opponent to be dreaded.” Lieutenant Governor McInnes must*not stand upon the order of his going, but must go at once. There is a limit to the forbearance of the people of British Columbia, and that limit has been passed.—Columbian. McInnes should be dismissed be- fore he has an opportunity to thwart the will of the people. There should be in the governor’s chair at this juncture a man who will carry out the expressed wishes of the people. Such a man is not MclInnes.— Greenwood Times. The most effective - measure yet taken for the suppression of the Philippine rebellion is the extension of the American school system to the islands. The cause is to be found in the fact that the would-be premier pre- sumed upon a campaign of misrep- resentation, which was easily dis- counted when honest men took an opportunity to tell the plain truth at the proper time.—Nanaimo Herald. The World, although wishing it to be otherwise, bows to the decision of the people.” If such a huge corruption fund was used, how was it the will of the people? But one must not look closely at the explanatians of defeat by the defeated. Then it proceeds in another article to gloat over the prospect of ‘‘con- fusion worse confounded among a rabble of parties and factions,” end- 1 of Rossland may live to re- gret the day when they permitted the defeat of Mr. Macklntosh.— Nelson Economist.
