Art a feelin have been following, with some Interest, the subject of an arts centre for | have had the experience of performing in the old Notre Dame University Theatre, trying to play trumpet In an abandonned house of Ill-rapute and singing in choirs at the anclent Capito! Maybe there is some hope that we, in the backwaters of British Columbia, are now prepared for some of the finer things In life. It is Important that | say ‘‘ready'’ because according to an opinion by learned psychologists the human being Is only able to appreciate the essence of * quallty and excellence when he has passed through the basic survival stages. His basic needs of self-preservation — food, shelter and a little love — must first be provided. in other words we all need time and money before we can be peaceful enough to really watch and feel a good theatrical performance. We must listen to good music with more than just our ears and that which Is left of our sound battered heads. - Most top artists paint with feeling, If we cannot fee! the painting then we have missed the whole polnt of the artists effort. We cannot feel for another's creative effort or performance unless we have ceased to worry about money, house payments and whether the kids are getting drunk at the family bar. : | know many struggling unfortunates value the fine things, just as many boorish rich eat too much or who are so busy making money they couldn't recognize the difference Bach and Bluebeard, i But money and culture seem to relate. Opera houses In the past were not bullt by the poor. They were built by lovers of culture, good breeding, higher education and an ablding appreciation of the arts. Therefore, dear friends of the arts centre committee, you are wasting your time talking to politicians and governments of any kind who are poweriess In their abillty to concelve of the value to of as as an arts centre. The city council of Trail pleasantly amazed me when It backed ‘the Idea in principle. Maybe that is all the encouragement we need. It is my suggestion and opinion that a society be struck to ralse the money from the members themselves, who, If my above assumption Is correct, will have more than enough money or love and feelings for the arts to build their own complex. ean remember a golf club house that was bullt by selling debentures. The new arts centre can be a business proposition, so let's keep the government grants out of the picture. . Freeze-dry process Comforters - favorite. in fashionable warmth A Sense of tranquility and “ comfort are important con- siderations in the selection of bedroom furniture and lin- ens. The bedroom should be a place to relax, read a good ook and sleep comfortably. It should be a refuge from hectic, activity-filled days. Traditional favorites, such as the down comforter, are the energy shortage which requires lower thermostats and today’s interest in ef- ficiency have contributed to this renewed demand. Comforters filled with * down or feathers and down have been popular for cen- turies in Europe, where the bedrooms are often cool. Hunting Quiz: Does a long-barreled shotgun “reach out" farther than a shorter one? Answer: While this was true in.black powder cays, it is not true today. In black powder days a long barrel gave the powder time for full combustion, Yet this idea persists in this day of smokeless powder when it’s choke that deter- mines how ‘far out” a gun will reach, Actually it’s not how far the shot, will go, but how dense the pattern of . your shot is at any given distance that brings down the birds. A full choke barrel will have a tighter pattern and hence put more shot where the bird is at say, 40 yards, -than a barrel with no choke. A 26-inch barrel will have just as dense a pattern as a 80-inch barrel so will “reach out” just as far. There's some loss of muzzle velocity in the shorter gun, but not enough to make much difference. * * _* Some of the best recipes for seafood are found in club newsletters, official pamph- lets by various fisheries agencies, and notebooks of individual cooks.
