Catalyst Gi SANDMAN INN 1944 Columbia Ave. THE REVEALING FILM WHICH EXPOSES THE TRUTH ABOUT THE WATCHTOWER CULT! The revealing film which exposes the truth about the Watchtower! DATE: August 9 theory on how to become a star is to make an album, then tour to pro- mote that album. The Tennessee River Boys are doing it the other way ‘around. For almost three years they were one of the most popular attractions at Opry- land USA, a live variety show in Nashville, and for the last couple of years they have toured constantly, doing 150 one-shot concerts in the last 12 months. Remarkably, they're only now putting together their first record deal. “We've talked to fans about putting out a record for a long time, but now we're actually talking to some labels, so at least that’s some progress,” Matt Davenport, the group's founder, said in an interview at the Big Val ley Jamboree in Craven. “We were in the studio and put down some tunes. It’s all getting a little closer to be- coming a reality.” SIX EN BAND The six-member group consists of vocalist Daven- port, a native of North Caro- lina; pianist Dan Truman of Utah; fiddler Gene Johnson from Pennsylvania; drummer Brian Prout of New York; guitarist Marty Roe from Ohio; and lead guitarist Jim Olander of Michigan. The band was formed al- most by accident, when Dav- enport and former member Danny Gregg were approach- ed to do an appearance on a Nashville television show. They needed some backup and pulled together some players they knew who were available. “Five: seconds before we auditioned we didn't know what we were going to sing,” recalled Davenport. “We sort of put it together on the spot.” Their appearance got so many phone calls from fans they were called back for more, and the group became a fixture on the show. HAD NO TIME Davenport said that doing the Opryland show and the touring meant a hectic sched- ule that left little time to pursue a record contract. “Basically we weren't real- ly looking for a record deal,” he said. “We wanted to wait until we got the kind of mat- erial together that we wanted to put on an album. We didn't want to throw something together.” Roe added it took some time to go through personnel changes in the band. “I think this combination of people is a lot closer to being commercial than any other combination we've had in the past.” PURE COUNTRY Although the band has a young style — trendy outfits and long hair — its music is pure middle-of-the-road coun- try. “When we worked at Opry- land, that was the audience we played to — everyone from children to older age groups,” said Roe. “We had to form our show to fit that and it’s carried over into our original music as well.” Unlike other large country groups, there is no front man for The Tennessee River Boys.
