The West Kootenay Boundary AIDS Network Outreach Support Soci- ety (ANKORS) facilitator Karen Muirhead, said it’s lack of educa- tion that puts a person risk. “We have to admit everybody is at risk. There are simple ways to prevent AIDS—one of the biggest ways ig by talking.” ., The worst thing about AIDS, said Muirhead, is that it is pre- ventable, and yet some people refuse to talk about it. “AIDS is scary. It’s still a four- letter word. The best prevention is that everyone talk honestly about how it’s transmitted.” It isn't enough, Muirhead explained, to simply talk about AIDS. Instead frank talk, which some people might find uncom fortable to discuss, and the use of condoms are the best weapons r : ti contracting i Muirhead said the recent opening of the ANKORS regional office in Castlegar at 903-4th Street will be a step in the direction of educating the Loaaeee With a grant from the B.C. AIDS Secretariat the office will be able to offer eduction to the public, schools, and work- places, as well as for profes- sional health and social service providers. It will also counsel, give referrals, and supply advo- cacy and support services for those who are HIV positive and their friends, family and care providers.
