The time has not come when British Columbia can with any degree of cer- tainty eay that an export duty on ore would revert to her benefit. Let the Le Roi people build ot Northport if they must, and by that time the Pilot Bay smelter will be in full blast, s0 a com- parison can be made of the relative merits of the two locations, ani the province will be in a better position to judge of the question. What is the matter of the Miner ex- pressing itself upon the Sabbath closing movement. It is surely of enough im- portance to Rossland to draw out an ex- pressing from her local newspapers. Now is no time to be on the fence. It is either right or wrong to rigidly en- force the law and make others more stringent. The Recor believes that due respect is now being shown the Christ- ian people and that to agitate the mat- ter and go into the courts at this time would do Roseland a decided injury. —_—_—_—_— We regret to see our morning contem- porary gradually coming down. This morning it appears with its 24 columns each two inches shorter, making more than one coluinn less composition. But it is better to try and get the expenses somewhere near the income. Unfortu- nately they have been running behind ever since they were 80 foo'ish as to start adaily. The weekly was then a sixteen-page paper and paying well. It would have been better to let well enough alone. Laying all ‘“‘joshing’”’ aside, we would like to see the Miner settle down upon a substantial, paying basis and live long and prosper. ——— FLYING MACHINE DIDN’T FLY. Heavy Clouds and aSlight Snow Stopped the Exhibition. Colorado Springs, Colo., Aug. 7.— William B. Felts did not make his jump from Pike’s peak today, but that was not his fault. With the conditions of the clouds and fog it would have been a blindfolded leap to certain destruc- tion. Felts went up to the sammit this morning, carrying his i aero- officers | t so attracts Jim towards the other side, for it is said he hasa spark of adventure in his makeup. If he is caught this time though, and recognized as being b fore deported, it is a clear case of havin, is cue Clipped where bis hair is cut short. >_— CANOVAS ASSASSINATED. se Spanish Minister Slain by Michael Angino Golli. Castillo, the prime minister of Spain, was agsussinated today at Santa Agueda by an anarchist. The murderer fired three shots, two of which struck the premier in the head and the other in the chest. ‘lhe wounded man lingered unconscious for two hours and died at three o’clock this afternoon. His wife was but a short distance away when he fell. Santa Agueda is noted for its baths. The place is between San Sebastian, the summer residence of the Spanish court, and Victoria, the capital of the province of Alava, about 30 miles south of Bi'lio. The premier went there last Thureday totake a three weeks’ course of the baths, afte: which he expected to return to San Sebastian to see United States Minister Woodford when that gentle- man should be officially received by the queen regent. The assassin was immedistely ar- rested. He isa Neapolitan and gives the name of Rinaldi, but it is believed his real name is Michael Angino Golli. The queen regent. on hearing the news, dispatched her own physician, Dr. Bustoe, by a special train from San Sebastian. Canovas was dead, she wired her con- Golence to the widow. —— LAURIER WELCOMED HOME. Upon His Return From Abroad. Two hours were re- quired in adjusting the big wings, but heavy clouds and a slight snowfall at the time convinced him=that a leap from the peak would have been suicidal. The leap was postponed, but Felts is still on the peak tonight, and says that he will remain there until the conditions ure favorable, when he will sail down into Colorado Springs, 12 miles dis- tant. Great crowds went np to_ the peak to witness the leap of the daring seronaut, and field-glasses and telescopes were in reat demand. The crowds were great- fy disappointed on account of the post- ponement. —~——_ WAS TWICE DEPORTED. Mr. Slick Anxious to Become a Citizen of the United States. Jim Slick is all that his name implies. He is a Chinaman and _ has the distruc- tion of having been twice deported from the United States. The last time he was deported from Seattle, the officers believing that it was his first time in the country. They did not know that Jim had been deported from San Fran- cisco before that. Jim confided all of his troubles to one of the city patrolmen who knew him well in Victoria. The erstwhile Chinese said that although the Flowery king- dom was good and British Columbia no slouch, he liked the United States, and jnt-nded to make another attempt to hecome one of Uncle Sam’s citizens.
