Brown Rot has left its mark once already this year
across the Kootenays in the form of Apricot Blossom Blight.
Now with the nearing of the stone fruit harvest season, the
second and more familiar phase of this disease is threat-
ening.

Any significant rainfall between now and September
can cause Brown Rot to move into the ripening fruit of
cherries, apricots, plums and peaches. Once this problem is
seen there is little that can be done to cure it, the only
effective approach is to prevent it.

fruit rot is isolation. If you live in an area well removed from
all other fruit trees (especially apricots) and you only havea
few trees, you may not any problem.

settled areas are not isolated from this disease.

Next, you must understand and watch for the
development stage at which each fruit becomes susceptible
to this disease. Under normal conditions Brown Rot does not
attack green fruit, it can go after cherries when they have
the first hint of red color and apricots and peaches when the
first yellow or orange color is seen. At that stage a pre-

Later on, when the fruit is almost ripe, another
application of fungicide is necessary if much rain is experi-
enced. If a lot of rain occurs you will not prevent all the rot,
but hopefully it will be kept to a tolerable level. One of the
best fungicides for control of this disease is Benomy] (also
known as Benlate).

liant Cemetery.

Mrs. Anutooshkin was
born Nov. 12, 1912 at Sunny
Isle, Sask. and came to Ootis-
chenia as a small child. In
1936 she married George P.
Anutooshkin and has lived in
Ootischenia all of her life.
