CASTLEGAR NEWS, August 10, 1983 Aerobic dancing for men too getting in on the aerobic dancing fad. Such dancing — also know as dancefit, jazzercize, dancercize and so on — used to be an all-female preserve. But now men, often taken to classes by wives or girl friends, are enjoying the benefits of increased stamina, greater muscle def- inition and less body fat. It has reached the point where the Hamilton YMCA is planning an all-male aerobic dance program. Even Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League has aerobics-to-music incor- porated into their training camp this spring. Ray Jones, head trainer of. the Ticats, said response from the players was good. Aerobic workouts were an important part of team efforts to reduce injuries during the season. “Aerobics accomplish a lot in stretching the muscles, which is a prerequisite for no injuries,” Jones said. But he said football players, used to a different kind of condition- ing, found the exercises difficult. “When they were out there — and they'd been running for three weeks — they found it harder than all the running they'd done.” Restaurateur Steve Tarpos, 24, agrees about the challenge offered by aerobic dancing. He lifts weights, has taken ballet classes for three years and runs six kilometres aday but says aerobics is the most difficult of his fitness activities. DANCE NOT EASY “At first it looks easy, but it's really tough until you get into it. If I didn’t run, I don't think I could do it.” Collette Wilson, co-owner of a Hamilton exercise studio, says many of the men in her * classes originally came because they wanted to see whether the workouts were as tough as they had heard. Eventually they realize the Program can give them not only the cardiovascular ben- efits of jogging but also better balance, shape, muscle tone and i Wilson Gov't helps bolster industry GORD MenTOsH 8T. CATHARINES, Ont. (CP) —, The provincial “Because the men are not quite as flexible as women to begin with, that’s where they can get even more out of the. Program than the women do,” she said. However, one thing the dance aerobics does not do is offer a chance to girl-watch. “From the time you start your routine, you're looking at the instructor and to keep up with her,” said Tarpos, who is often out- numbered by women 80-to-1. “You don't have time to be looking at girls or feeling self-conscious.” Cruise will be. safe OTTAWA (CP) — Testing the cruise missile in Canada will have virtually no enviro- nmental impact, says the De- fence Dep: hope for the future of Ontario's auto industry Hes in this small city in the Niagara region. It is home to Ontario's auto technology centre, where ‘the province is spending $20 million over the next five years to bolster a once-mighty industry, Such a centre was considered for Ohio but dropped when a pair of consultants told state officials little could be accomplished. The bulk of Ontario's auto industry consists of small to medium-sized firms from Ingersoll to Chatham that make everything from wheel assemblies to brake drums. Most are small, family-owned operations — employing as few as a dozen people. They employ more than 50,000 workers, These tine firms frequently provide the basis of employment in many small cities in Ontario and their decline has been one of the chief reasons once-prosperous cities such as St. Catharines and Chatham have had unemployment rates as high as 20 per cent in recent months. The auto parts industry is in trouble and the technology centre's manager, George Lacy, says his job is to help them survive and make it less attractive for vehicle manu- to move parts to offshore centres such as Korea or Brazil. 3 ‘The auto technology centre was devised with them in iid a8 PAE OL the, Qntario government's Board of Industrial L There are five other centres across toe province dispensing knowledge about everything from agriculture to robotics. The centre's job is to play match-maker between the little parts producers and existing technology for a fee. ‘It’s Lacy’s hope to dt enough tech- with aler, rolls off the thoughts of W. Edwards Deming, the Rican statistician ignored in North America but elevated to hero status by the Japanese. DEVELOPS SYSTEM Deming -developed a system in the 1950s called statistical process control for manufacturing. The Japanese credit this system with their metamorphosis from a of cheap trinkets and low-quality goods to an nology, and process development to the small producers so that some of them will survive the auto industry's shake out. . Last D an Ontario g report warned that independent parts producers can expect to be squeezed in the next five years. Long supply aren't bei and the parts producers are caught in the middle of an upheaval as the big North American auto producers retool and compete with the Japanese. That means the parts makers will have to innovate and mend their ways drastically or see their orders go to low-wage countries such as Mexico. The centre is supposed to prevent this from happe: Lacy says he plans to but for the next a months ing parts about parts | produetion. ‘ Lacy, a 85-year veteran of the domestic auto industry \ industrial er. "Deming taught the Japanese the key to increased profits is elimination of defects, not cranking out more units. Today it is estimated a Japanese car costs 400 per cent less to make than its North American counterpart. He also taught that assembly line workers.should have more authority for quality control and that enhanced quality means greater productivity in the long run. Also the parts producer is the new relationship between the auto makers and their suppliers. Where suppliers used to get design help from the auto makers, they now can expect to be treated more like an independent eee makers will also be pushed towards the so-called aftermarket, which will continue to grow as people need new parts' to keep their cars on the road longer. So far the centre has signed five consulting contracts, Lacy says. DISCOVERY 12 oFr But a spokesman confirm- ed Tuesday that further tests are under way to buttress that conclusion, reached on the basis of tests carried out in southern California. “Our conclusion is that (the environmental | impact) Dog days got you down? Head for Discovery Day — and ‘track down exciting buys in almost every de- partment of the store! Sum- mer fashion, leisure items, sporting goods, house- wares, home furnishings. . Carle took issue with a Southan News report suges- ting that the go-ahead for testing was given before a full environmental assess- ment was carried out. The government said in July when it approved cruise tests that there were no “safety, security or environ- mental difficulties or dangers in the proposed test pro- gram. But that conclusion was reached largely by adapting data from U.S. test flights to the Canadian North, Sou- tham said Carle confirmed that the initial assessment was reach- ed on the basis of test flights made by the U.S. military in -California, He said it was found that it would be safe to Proceed with tests over northern sections of Canada. New test for Down's Syndrome OTTAWA (CP) — Clinical trials of a new test that can detect Down's Synd: of pregnancy and takes only about 10 days to analyse, The early in a pregnancy are to begin this month at Ottawa Civic Hospital. Dr. Henry Muggah says researchers hope the test will prove as safe and more useful than amniocentesis, the method now used to detect fetal defects. Down's Syndrome is a form of moderate to severe mental retardation. Muggah says the new test — called chorionic villous biopsy — is used in the Soviet Union and China and has at- tracted interest in North America. “One (research) group will complete their study, con- clude it's safe and begin using it, and suddenly all the rest who have been doing re- search on it will say they're ready to go, too,” he predicts. The early detection can provide the option of an abortion early in the preg- - nancy, safer than a late abor- tion. The new test can be done in the seventh or eighth week removing a piece of the plac- enta surrounding the fetus with a small instrument in- serted through the cervix and then analysing the cells. Amniocentesis, . n done in the 15th or 16th week of pregnancy, takes several weeks to analyse. It involves extracting a small amount of amniotic fluid surrounding the fetus and growing cells found in the fluid. Muggah says the trials at Civic Hospital should show whether the new test can cause miscarriage, pre- mature labor or hinder the growth of a fetus. Studies done elsewhere, he says, suggest the test carries roughly the same risk as amniocentesis — about one miscarriage in every 200 tests, 3 The risk of defects that Produce conditions such as Down's Syndrome is one in 1,000 for a 80-year-old woman but rises to one in 20 for a 46-year-old woman.
