FORGAARD Processing Superintendent half of the known PCBs — polychlorinated biphenyls — in Canada are in Ontario. On- tario and Quebec together account for about 85 per cent of all of the toxic chemicals in the ‘country, he said. The manufacture of PCBs was banned by the federal government in 1977 and Mc- Donald said his department now is trying to phase them out. Castlegat’fire chief Bob Mann said he has been check- ing for PCBs when doing in- spections for more than a _year, mostly to see if any PCBs are being stored. Mann said so far no PCBs have been found within the city. But it’s ‘possible that there are some here, he said. He said old type fluores- cent lights have PCBs in the starter controls. If these con- trols start to leak, PCBs could spill out. Mann said that although he can't go around checking every fluorescent light, he does look at the lights when <_ elge PAV ’ ANERIDGE aane LTp, — INDUSTRIAL — RES! 352-7333. The report, which was ex- _ pected earlier this year, was delayed in order to include data on water flow in the river after the exceptionally dry summer in the area, said— Dennis McDonald, _ the re- gional director. ze “Because it was so as we thought it would be useful to look at this year's data,” he said. To do so, McDonald said, the hydrology section of the report had to be redone to include this summer's data. After the draft of the report is released at the end of October, the ministry will allow one month to six weeks for public comment before making its final recommen- dations, McDonald said.
