The beary re Valley lumber company aiso focused last year one th ts hi 1.1 million ng areas. Slocan increases lumber recovery Slocan Forest Products Ltd. put an on in 1989 which was otherwise a “*holding pattern year’’ for the Slocan City sawmill company, says SPF divisional manager Terry Dods. December to February when snow forced crews out of the forest. Removal of the infested trees will con- tinue this summer, Wickstron says. SFP continues to use varied har- vesting methods in accordance with SFP planted 1.1 million jast year throughout its harvesting areas and has begun replanting in the Kootenay Lake area, says Dave Wickstron who took over —as woodlands manager when Dods ‘became divisional manager. A major initiative last summer was the removal of spruce trees infected with spruce beetles on Asher Creek near Trout Lake, Wickstron says. In_four_ months, SFP_ built 15 kilometres of road, a project which included erecting several bridges and removing an extensive amount of rock, into the undeveloped area, he Says. Trees were removed from the pr that came into effect in 1987. Each time the company plans to harvest in a new area, a pre-harvest silviculture Prescription must be written and ap- proved. , The prescription ensures the area will be harvested by the most en- vironmentally sensitive method and the area will be reforested when har- vesting is complete, Wickstron says. In the\coming_year,-SFP_plans-to plant 2.1 million seedlings and the company hopes to begin harvesting on the West Arm of Kootenay Lake. No new equipment was installed in the mill in 1989 but the computerized headrig and new saw system installed in 1988 has substantially increased lumber recovery. “More recovery is the key’’ is the “theme’’ of modern sawmills, Dods says. A new cedar debarker will be in- stalled this month and will be able to cut bark into short lengths that won’t clog the conveyer belts the way long strings of bark can, he says. And SFP plans to replace an edger either late this year or next year, Dods says. Slocan Group, the company that owns SFP and five other mills, saw some changes in the past year, Dods says. A mill in Vavenby north of Kamloops was completely rebuilt and a sawmill and veneer and plywood plant in Fort Nelson has been added to the Slocan Group of mills.
