CASTLE NEWS, Castlegar, B.C. ae Se Tiiursday, October 16, 1952 * Authorized as Second Class Mail, Post Office Department, Ottawa THE CASTLE NEWS : Published Every Thursdhy at “THE CROSSROADS OF THE KOOTENAYS” ‘ L, V. Campbell, Owner-Pablisher Canadian Weekly A if Subscription rate $1.50 per year or 15c. per: month: by carrier EDITORIAL The Teachers’ Convention This week, for the first time in its history, the village of Castlegar is host to school hers of West Kootenay and Boundary, At their conferences here for the next two: days, some 450 men and women, charged with the education of our youth in this Kootenay country. will discuss mutual problems and ways of improving their pedagogical methods. Educating a youngster, is“no simple matter and thus the teachers will have plenty to talk about, Their efforts’ will benefit not only themselves but also the communities which they serve, i Castlegar has much to be proud of also in this connect- ion. That the teachers are holding their, convention here rather than in’ Nelson, Trail or Grand Forks, is proof of the increasing importance this district is:gaining. The vilage can be proud too, of the wholehearted effort on the part of almost every resident, that has gone into the massive preparations for the event, The Convention Committee had but to announce what was needed, and there was a club, a family or an individ- ual that volunteered to fill the need. It is true, the convention is not over yet, indeed is, only beginning tonight. But we feel sure that the enthusiastic support that firms, dlubs, societies, families‘and individuals hhave freely given will result in a successful convention for all. We take: this occasion to welcome all the teacher dele- gates to the convention and to Castlegar. We welcome all the distinguished speakers we shall have the opportunity of meeting and hearing. We trust that afl will enjoy their brief stay here and will draw much benefit from the conferences they will participate in. A word of appreciation is due to the teachers of our own village, who as members of the Convention Committee, bore the direct responsibility of arranging the thousand and one details that preparation for the convention entailed. As we attend the public meetings and read the accounts of the con- vention deiiberations, 1t will be so easy to overlook-the long conferences, hours of work, careful planning and detailed arrangements that had to precede to make the events of the | 5 coming two days possible, ‘The teachers’ convention here. is not merely a teachers’ “event, It ist district-event, and one from which every resident will benefit in one way or another. Thus every resident of | ion, Castlegar and District, can thank ‘the teachers of Castlegar _ their capable preparations — a job well done. vee “to the Editor : by E.G. 0. => At Conventions Some there are who denourice all conventions, both of assemb- ly and of custom, claiming the one to be a vast unprofitable waste of human’ effort, and the other to! be a stultifying’ strait jacket. to the human ‘soul—a “law of-fools,” ers meanwhile, would rally to the defense, claiming use for social conventions in. that they give some stability to a. disente- erating society. and for assemb- Variety Conceri Te of the IODE will send five Christ- mas parcels cial IODE headquatrers. merchants ofthe village have experiences when she to wounded Cann-| and her husband! drove tlie: new dian servicemen in Japan, it was decided at the regular. business ‘ Mrs, Colin ‘Petts, Empire Study | from the factory in Toronto, and Just a. | CenreneT, Tene aaa Genie et hey tip to Beamer : Replace Xmas Draw: |"°re rout cat wos ts ® for the evening were LOOKING Go) |NOM.E. Until this year, West Kootenay Teachers’ Conventions have been held in the Trail or Nelson dis- tricts which have good sized towns, large schools, and from three to five times as many teachers as the Castlegar district! This year, for the first time in its history,’ Castlegar is. playing host’ to what is probably. the largest assembly of teachers this rea has yet seen. Whether the district meastires up to the role of host or not is a.question which the next’ three days only, will tell. One ‘thing is certain at this very moment, however, any failure would not be the result of lack of effort, Cooperation If evera group of teachers had the support of the people of their district, that group is the Castle- ax District Teachers" Associar tion.
