One other change which will affect the roster’s of some teams is a change in age limit of eligible play- ers for the KUHL. No teams will be allowed to have 21 year-old players, but the Size of the roster has been increased from 19 to 20 players per team “The 21 limit leaves room for more local players,” Tomlin said Coach Sauer agrees the limit will allow more Castlegar area players a chance to skate with the Rebels. As in years past, the Rebels are usually made up mainly of local players with very few out-of-town players. “Other than if we bring some players in from out-of-town, the rule won’t affect us,” Sauer said. Hitting from behind is now an automatic two minute penalty with the five minute major at the discre- tion of the referee, included in each call will be an instant game sus- pension. If a player removes his helmet during a fight he will, upon the dis- cretion of the referees, receive a ten minute penalty, and be ejected from that game and sit out the next three games. This change in the rules, accord- ing to Rebels Executive President Robin Tomlin, “will probably elim- inate some fighting.” Rebels Coach Gary Sauer said that, while the changes look good on paper, “You can’t put in rules that take away the clean hard hitting style. It's a game of contact, lets face it” While the effort is to keep the game a fair, clean-playing match the new rules could have the oppo- site effect, depending on how the leagues referees interpret the changes. * “They are putting lots of respon- sibility on the refs by adding more discretionary penalties,” Sauer said. Every hockey fan loves to see fast paced end-to-end action as. do the coaches and players. Tha rule changes could help ensure more games of that desired style but on the other hand it could backfire. “It is either going to speed the game up, or we could be adding time onto the game with calling more penalties,” Sauer said.
