Effective June 15, all uten- sils were removed from Slocan Chief and Silver Spray cabins. They will be returned Oct. 15. “We have been forced to take such measures because of increased use. Many park users expect utensils to be at the cabin, but find there isn't enough to go around when they arrive. This has created a major problem for the branch and for hikers. Now, everyone staying at the cabins will have to carry their own utensils,” he said. “The parks branch is at- tempting to encourage hiker: who are planning overnight stopsin the part to be equipped with tents and backpack stoves. Hiking equipment should:.be such that park users are equipped and prepared to meet any and all emergencies,” he said. Group hikers travelling to Slocan Chief Cabin are faced with additional regulations: Mr. Russell said, “There is an overcrowded situation at the cabin. To combat the problem, groups of five or more will be restricted from using the cabin between Friday and Monday. This will allow weekend hikers to make use of the cabin.” The restriction is in effect from June 15 to Oct. 15. ‘The Slocan Chief Cabin is a public shelter, managed by the provincial parks branch. Visitors are sub- Sete to a maximum stay of By John Dalziel Last week was a big one for the senior Seniors as they had two special days in a row. Our regular Wednesday morn- ing ‘do’ was enhanced by the occasion of our first ever “steak fry." Thanks to the co-operation and willingness of most of the gang, this went over so well that there are already demands to know when the next one is. Most of the boys cooked their own steaks, some of them for the first time, and a darn good job they did. For those who, were too chicken to tackle the chef idea, several of the members did double duty. The consensus of opinion was that it had been a good deal and why . hadn't we thought of it before? Being the first attempt, there were the odd mishaps but they only served to show how such efforts can be better run in the future. Even the thought of the succulent sirloins to come did not stop the boys from going out and murdering the course as usual. Also, as usual, my arch rival, Bert Lamb, suc- ceeded in wiggling his way into a different foursome from me. This is getting to be a real battle of wits and, since one of. us has only half the equipment, it is going to be interesting to see how it comes out. Anyway, after everyone was back in the lubhi it was learned that thre days betwe- en June 15 and Oct. 15. Available at Castlegar Savings Credif Union 2 BRANCHES 605 2nd St. S. The winners, a group who came in with five of a kind, were Bob Pickering, Ira Hend- rickson, Art Hawkins, Joe Cushner, Curt Waterman and Claude Bissell. Close on their heels with full houses, were Ozzie Jones, Cecil Bradford and Tony Schiavon. Rounding out the score with two pairs were Joe Schiavon, Gilbert Fowler and Bill Sommerfield. Thursday morning saw the boys return the recent visit of the Rossland-Trail gang. Twen- ty-six men made the trip into Birchbank and were royally treated by the Seniors from that club, Again Bert Lamb eluded me, but I.had a very enjoyable time with Curt Waterman as partner, playing with Taffy Harper and Jack Gellatley. I never did hear who came out on top but the following brought back shiny new golf balls as trophies from the event: Low Net: Andy Honcher, Ernie Carkner and Otto Walker NOTICE FRANK’S SHARPENING SERVICE is CLOSED © for holidays from” JULY 18 - AUG. 9 330 2 Notes from the Costlegar Golf Course Sunfest Golf Tourney this Saturday Sr. Winners in the Poker Hand division were: Art Hawkins, Pete Murphy and Cyril Bell. Last Wednesday's Men's Night saw an entry of 87 vying for the honors in a Low Net that the company will be congenial, so come on out! At 34, J. Thompson, Nick Burak, Fred Pozdnekoff, G. Kabatoff, Jim Corbett, Norman Fishwick and Harry Sheridan. In the “fewest putts" phase of the evening, Mickey Maglio emerged as the old master. Mickey toured the course with a handsome total of 12 putts for the nine holes; he was followed closely by “Hole in One” Mike Chernenkoff and Dick Wayling with 13. At 14 were Stan Partridge (been taking lessons Stan?) and Ralph Scott, and to round things out, with 15, Ken Makortoff, Peter (Pat) Pictin and K. McGuire. This week's effort will have been “Four-Man Best Ball” and looked after by Stosh, Nick, Kare, Bob and Willie so should result in a lot of fun. The announcements made were about the upcoming Sunfest Golf Tournament. That will be this Saturday and is open toone and all; all you need is a set of clubs and a desire for a good time, Start is scheduled for nine o'clock Saturday morning. A one-day event, it had become an integral part of the Castlegar Sunflower Fest and deserving of everyone's support. The course is in almost perfect shape and we can guarantee i the new club- house will benefit from this effort of Denny's to the tune of jabout $450, and that ain't, hay. . At time of writing, he is in good condition but still resting in” intensive care. This should not last too long and then we can call around and pay our res- © pects.
