What started out as a response to an ad about getting started in worm farming and the subsequent purchase of two bins of worms has grown into not only a thriving worm farm i worm castings, the almost black, odorless by-product extremely high in nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus. In addition to their use for fertilizing gardens. and shrubs, the castings are ex- cellent fertilizer for house plants as well, ! trays under fdenticle condl- tions, After two weeks, the plants: grown in ‘Garden Gold’ potting soil show mark- ed growth over plants in other soils, C, I J RECOrd TrackS weuncome _/ Rickie Lee Jones Usually when an “un- known" makes it with a hit single, there's a rush to buy an artist’s album which has little more to offer than the alreudy-overplayed hit tune, Not so with Rickie Lee Jones’ F ly-titled album. lo- cally at Wilson’s Florists, Erich hopping Centre, explained. “Two tablespoons will do a potted plant.” The castings are water soluable and they will not burn a plant if an excessive amount has been applied. This world’s summer | curling championship takes place this Monday through to” July 14 with the official welcome Sunday. The sched- ule of events for the first three days are as follows: A J.C. Welcome takes place at Kootenay Bay ferry landing with registration from 12 noon to 9 p.m. in the curling club lounge. The local Rotary Club will be holding a barbeque at the Lakeside Park which will also be the site of the Nelson Hockey Club beer garden. Jones penned all the tunes on the album as well as handling some of the arrang- ing, which is a plus factor, and is complimented by more that adequate mixing and production. - Rickie Lee's voice. is similar to Joni Mitchell's, and when combined with a com- Hined . delivery of a Van Morrison or Bruce Spring- steen it adds a rather inter- esting twist. In fact, Jones’ lyrics from the ‘familiar Spring: steen life in the streets format, and The Last Chance Texaco cut seems to be stretching that just a bit too far. Jones creates a rather trite analog between a finely- tuned automobile and the Dolly Parton of which every. trucker dreams: There was this block-busted blonde He loved her — free parts and labor, But she broke down and died, - And threw all the rods he gave her. Texaco can be forgiven, as the remainder of the songs provide for an overall inter- esting album. Poco-Legend This is the album that is finally supposed to bring that ever-elusive goal, commercial success to one of the earlier, country flavored-rock bands. It would appear that prelim!- nary speculations are correct. as Heart of the Night and Spellbound, have -recelved extensive air play. It would also appear that in producing a financially successful " venture, some- thing has been lost in the process. Although the mate- rial’ on the album fs a welcomed relief from disco mania, there is little that distinguishes it from .just another Eagles retread. The production of the” album has a touch too much polish, which takes some of the edge off what could have been a more relaxed venture, and eventually it drowns itself in the echoeing studio. + The band had built a following substantial enough to ‘weather a number of personnel changes over the years, and perhaps major recognition was just around the corner. At any rate, it makes one long for. the earlier Poco sound that stem- med from the Buffato Spring: | | field days. & Beyies Bee rt ‘p SRBRA , Downstairs at the Marlane Hotel Open Tuesday thru Saturday 9:00 p.m. #11 2:00 a.m. a .
