The banner was made ially for the Day assembly in the school’s gymnasium, Kids learn martial arts MONTREAL (CP) — To guard themselves from molesters, children as young as.six years old are learning to fend off possible attacks with moves learned in martial arts classes. A program known as Child Assault Prevention tells children of their basic rights and emphasizes self-assertion. Offered in Montreal YMCAs, schools and community centres, it includes such activities as judo and karate. “I find it gives them assurance,” says Louise San Gregorio as she watched her son Franco, seven learn basic- judo moves from Julius Butte at the suburban Westmount YMCA. Butte, a former assistant coach of Romania's nationa: judo team, believes judo is an important skill that helps give young people an orientation in life. “I want them to learn freedom through sport, to open their minds. Children who learn martial arts learn about morals and learn not to be aggressive. It’s a mental and emotional thing, as well as physical.” FREAK ADULT JAW At the Eclectic Martial Arts Centre, Tony Blauer, 25, who has 13 years of martial arts training and teaches student moves that could break an adult's jaw, encourages his pupils to go all-out against him. “If they can't pull it off here, how are they going to have the confidence to do it in a real situation?” he asks. But Blauer also emphasizes the intellect. “I don't feel little kids have the confidence and the body" size tofend off an attacker. Gelinas-Klouvatos — Kajukenbo being a combination of several martial arts that was developed in Hawaii in the 1940s — begins by teaching basic kicks and then shows children how to strike the groin or the eyes.
