The Castlegar Sun Wednesday, May 6, 1992 Wednesday, May 6, 1992 Surviving that dreaded job interview The Castlegar Sun Calvin and H bb HOROSCOPES as Page 9B ! by Bill Watterson a — ny STAY AWAY, SUSIE! I DONT |] THE STARS AND PLANETS Ip iTS THE BUS! THE BUS IS Before you go to a job inter- view, it’s important to have a well written resume. A resume is a brief written summary of who you'd like to be, and what you wish you'd done if you were you, or better yet, if you were someone else. Check it carefully for any mistakes, especially grammar, punctu- ation or spelling mistakes. It’s important to motivate and impress your prospective employer. Use simple words. Don’t be vague when describing good quality crayons and make sure you are old enough to have the PhD you have drawn. Cos- tume shops sell excellent face paints. Barker’s — e, Selections Lynn Barker wee who chose to quell pre-interview jitters on valium. He spent two days wandering around the park- ing lot, then he tumbled into a waste disposal bin and happily slept it off. When ihe accidently showed up in their recy- cling bin, (after all, why throw away a per- fectly good human being?) they hired him anyway. your duties. Use action verbs, such as, “passed out” and Sometimes it's important to leave out such personal history However, this is a very unorthodox method of seeking employment and is not to be d as a viable If you claim to be a geon, it is important to draw up the attendant document with D&E Gelerers Big or small, we cater to all 365-8369 items as p' or grandeur. Your employer will come to know and appreciate your idiosyncrasies in due time. Also, it’s essential to realize that threats and bribes are no way to ensure job success. It's probably a good idea also to include your own name, if you know it. When you go to your inter- prospective employer's office is considered a breech of good man- ners. Nor is valium a good idea. I've heard of one poor fellow method of obtaining work. On interview day, check your teeth for obvious signs of spinach, try to wear matching socks and underwear, (well you'll fee well dressed) and don't wear that tie with all the big mustard gobs on it. As for women, wear a mus- tache to ensure pay equity, or, if you already have your own mus- tache, darken it with shoe polish. It won't run unless you sweat. If none of these suggestions work for you, perhaps you don’t really want a job. If you've been out of work for ten years or more, then you really have a reputation to keep up. Perhaps these suggestions will work for you, even though they haven't worked for me. I get hundreds of fan letters every day though, and occasion- ally there are threats of job offers. I'm seriously considering becom- ing an apprentice safe cracker or oreo cookie tester. There's also an opening if I decide I want to be blown out of a cannon. Sometimes you can find work to do for free, like in charity orga- nization. It doesn’t help you at, but you won't be bored as you starve to death. A dilemma over leaving money to a supportive child and one who wants nothing to do with me Dear Ann Landers: Is there a moral or legal obligation for a parent to divide an estate equally among adult children? There must be thousands of parents who share my dilemma. My late husband and I had a son and a daughter. We adored them both. Ann Landers Syndicated Columnist i Their childhood days were the happiest of our lives. As married adults, neither child lives in this town, but our daughter has remained close through visits, phone calls and letters, while our son stepped out of our lives and we haven seen him only six times in the past 20 years. “Paul” made it clear that he wanted nothing to do with us and we never knew why. This has been the puzzle and heartbreak of my life. While my husband was alive, we tried to get together with our son and talk things over, but he refused. When our children were small, we struggled financially, but in later years we acquired a consid- erable estate through careful pending wise i My health is failing and I must get my affairs in order. Obvi child with Down syndrome. Eighty percent of all Down syn- drome children are born to your child has Down syndrome?” Of course I’m sure! Why would I say so if she had not been tested? People say, “She doesn't look like she has Down syndrome.” There are over 50 physical char- acteristics of Down syndrome. If a child is born with eight of these, a genetic test is usually done. Children with Down syndrome all look different and other than their Down syndrome characteristics, they resemble their parents. They do not “all look alike” nor are they a “race.” It is not unrealistic to believe that my child will be able to read at a fourth-grade level. She will not be “like a 3-year-old forever.” Many Down syndrome live complete, happy lives, so don’t pity me. Our daughter is a DOZENS OF PIANOS ON DISPLAY! The comments people have made demonstrate the need for educa- tion about this condition and all handicaps in general. Down syndrome is caused by an extra chromosome, either in the sperm or egg. It happens at the moment of conception. It was not because of anything I did or did not do while I was pregnant, nor is it anyone's fault. Your social life looks rather quiet, so use your free time constructively. If you are involved in anything creative, this is a good time to start a new project. Try to be more tolerant of others. TAURUS - April 21/May 21 Don't be too rigid about your routine this week. Some snags are going to crop up — probably around mid- week — that'll need immediate attention. So be prepared for a busy and fulfilling week LEO - July 23/August 23 You're going to be very involved in the domestic scene this week — and in pretty constant demand by loved ones.
