Regardless of the season, up- nd-down swings in emperature Can cause your ome, garage, apartment or storage area walls to sweat, crack and peel. Many people believe it is too expensive to find a permanent solution to the all- too-common problem of drafty windows. So what do homeowners or renders do? Often, they merely replaster and repaint damaged areas while using as much electricity, oil or gas heat as necessary to remain comfortable. Over an extended period of time, this “solution” can cost more money than some other ways to dampen drafts. Here are three ideas that can help lower your monthly fuel bills. The first project involves replacing your old double-hung windows with new double pane ones. A word of caution: Replacement requires a significant upfront outlay of time and money, so don’t do it unless your windows are falling apart and you absolutely have to make the adjustment. The average cost of a new window is $250. In addition to materials and a carpenter to install them, other workers would be needed to finish the job. Think about it: When you rip out the old window, you have to remove the wood molding, the surrounding inside wall and the outside siding material. The project Tequires specialists who can plaster or sheetrock the wall, paint the new material and handle other construction details. Installing new glass storm windows or thermopanes is, in principle, a good idea. Unlike a single pane of glass that actually conducts hot and cold air away from your living area, a double pane of glass sandwiches dead air that then acts as an effective weather barrier. This can prevent conduction and convection. Conduction is the process that allows cold air on the outside of your glass window to transmit the cold to the inside. During convection, cold drafts enter the room through cracks in the caulking around window frames This brings us to our second project, one that relies on plastic storm windows. Plastic helps you save on your energy bills by eliminating conduction and convection. But buyer beware: The quality of materials varies widely among brands. Harold G Warp, president of Warp Brothers. nearly 70-year-old plastics products manufacturing company, points out that one material literally in a class by itself, Flex-O-Glass, is clearer, stronger and will last longer (over several winter seasons) when compared to plastic sheeting. Flex-O-Glass is faster to cut to size and install than regular glass, which tends to be heavier and more expensive. Anyone with scissors, tacks or staples and molding strips can make their own storm windows. Hardware stores and home centers carry clear Flex-O- Glass, other less-clear plastic rolls and plastic window kits with everything your need to finish the job “Consumers should insist that their plastic storm windows provide a clear view just like window glass. But unlike glass, plastic storm windows won’t shatter when you’re installing them or when they are hit by snowballs or hail, for example,” Warp says. Flex-O-Glass was the original plastic storm window kit first patented by Harold Warp 69 years ago, in 1924 In addition to its use as a storm window, the material can also be used to tightly. seal doors, porches, sheds and other openings.
