In fact, there was no hydro or to protest B.C, government attempts to survey and subdivide comamunity lands at the New Set- tlement, I would like to clarify a few issues that may have arisen as a result of recent media Pp utilities in the ty until four years after Mr. Sorokin passed away. We have peacefully homestead- ed for 22 years. Now the goverm- ment's land agents claim that we age. ‘The New Settlement land was acquired for the purpose of home- steads and gardens, for the people who were living in the gravel pit at Mountain Prison in Agassiz. These were Doukhobors who could never consent to private ownership of God's land. By mutual agreement (common law) it was clearly understood and accepted by every person who moved in (and the government) that the land was not to be subdi- vided and that there would be no private ownership. Individuals were, however, free to leave the community at any time and pur- chase land elsewhere. The intent of the New Settle- ment was to move these people out of the gravel pit and away from Mountain Prison, also to provide an opportunity for them to live a unique, spiritual, simple life, unen- A preci Perhaps you are wondering what ucts in the earty and mid 1980's. Now that there are so few of us left. who will have the spirit of our great forefathers, no doubt the governments feel that now is the time to finally and completely subjugate and assimilate the last of the Doukhobors. ‘This parcel of land, to the best of our k is still in the There seems to be a misp tion by some who wish to discredit our position, that we only want to freeload. This is far from the truth. The government has not spent any money providing service to the New Settlement. We built and our own Agricultural Land Reserve, and as such, cannot be subdivided. Yet the government has sold unsur- veyed lots and collected payment for them. They have stooped to confiscating bank accounts, ludi i that were sent roads and water services, we donate generously to area hospitals each year, We also have no equity in the land, so we cannot barter and profiteer by exploiting it. We do pay taxes; we have no choice, just like everyone else, our dollar is only worth 22 cents! We are not freeloaders. If we had ous gift not taking our good stewardship and reputation for What concerns us most is that recent publicity may be making you question the value of donating blood...that you don’t feel as proud and important as you should. ‘We want to do everything in our power to address your concerns, alleviate your anxiety and reaffirm your commitment to the cause.
